my dog has allergies not sure to what. Shes been chewing at her fur. I have been giving her benadryl 2x a day but someone said you can give it every 8hrs is that true? I was also wondering what else I could do to help her feel a little better (itching wise). I also in the last 2 days started giving her salmon oil on her food but I been doing it 2x a day instead of 1x a day in a mega dose since she is such a big dog is there anything else I can get in pill form from petco that will help before i go spend big bucks at the vets just to get her some steriods which i don't want to put her on due to side effects?

Switch her to a better dog food.

Salmon oil is good; try some plain yogurt, too.
Benedryl has dye in it- unneccessary crap humans -and animals -don't need in their systems. Stay away from steroids...

Ideas:

Buy boots for her.

Wash off her feet & legs (maybe her belly too) when she comes in from outside. Baby wipes with lavender might help.

Ragweed is in bloom.

JP, are you doing what I told you to do? Did you get the Gold Bond Medicated Powder? Steroids will make her worse in the long run.

Probably not, she enjoys having something wrong with her animals so she can make threads like this.

yes i did do what you suggested but had to make a trip to the vet as it got infected and its busted open sores . the vet put her on antibiotics to get rid of the infection she shaved the area. The vet said she thinks its seasonal allergies.

i told the vet what i was feeding her and she just rolled her eyes. I am going to have to stop at petco (since you never told me where dowhat gets his dog food here) and buy her some all natural dog food for large breed puppies since the vet said regular puppy food isn't what she needs.

MOJO no i don't like starting threads about my babies but since i am a first time dog owner and others have been through this before I do like suggestions on what I can do before rushing off to the vet. PLease in the future do not respond to my stuff unless you have something useful to say.

Vets always say that dogs have allergies when they have a hot spot. Sometimes they're shedding and just trying to rid themselves of the hair. Hot spots ooze...the antibiotics don't do much for that, really..and I sure hope they didn't put her on a steroid.

Like I told you, you need to clip the area around the sore, and use the powder. Gold Bond Medicated Powder will dry up the spot in a couple of days.

As for where to buy the food...I know there's Lori Be but I think there's another place over there ...but I can't recall the name. She doesn't need a special large breed puppy food, just a decent puppy food.

jp2854, I completely know what you are going through. I don't know what breed of dog you have, but I have a golden that has had bad allergies for years. We've tried everything, steriods, antibiotics, sprays, wipes, you name it....he's had it! The biggest thing is trying to rule certain things out. Try switching him to a "limited protein" food. That consist of a diet that is not so commonly found, such as: beef, chicken and pork products. You want to look for foods such as veal and brown rice, salmon, herring, duck and potato...foods that they normally wouldn't eat. There are a variety of foods you can try. Clippers Canine Cafe has a brand named "California Naturals" and it's their herring and sweet potato formula that my dog did well on. If you notice any "good" changes in his skin, coat or eyes, then you might be on your path of ruling out whether or not it's a food allergy or an environmental allergy. Another food that I currently have my dog on is "Pennacle" and it's sold at Petco, it's about $50 a bag....the vets also sell good foods, but they are much more expensive. The vet has told us to bathe our dog weekly to wash away anything that might get on his coat that is an irritant to his system. He is fed 3v caps 2x daily, and gets nothing else besides his limited protein food. If you keep him on a limited diet food for atleast 6 months with nothing else (no treats, table scraps ect...) and you are not noticing any improvement, most likely it's not a food allergy. For other ideas you can email me or PM me. Goodluck!

thanks for the info loveshersmile. I went to petco today and got natural balance duck and potatoe dog food. she turned her nose up to it but I am going to continue to give it to her with the rest of the boiled chicken I have left that is how i got her to eat what I gave her tonight. She loves the duck and sweet potatoe dogs treats I gave her one and she ate it right up. I was told to get rid of her old treats and just give her the same food and same treats instead of giving her the ones I got from bjs when I was there 3 months ago (they are almost gone). I will just trash what I have left of them and give her just this. I had a nice long talk with a vet tech and she gave me some helpful information today that I took in as she also has a dog that has indoor and outdoor allergies and food allergies and she found this to work the best. she is going to learn to like this food. I got her the wetfood too as shes on meds now.

Catt if you saw her hotspot you would even say it looks bad. its all red and oozing and its also bleeding I am trying my hardest to keep her from licking it. She had some time out in the yard today I bet that is what set her off I am trying to keep the area clean I am not even allowing her to go in the store for long periods of time due to the floor not being the cleanest floor around even though its swept daily. My stepdad isn't happy that I am doing this but I he saw her spot and daid ouch it must hurt.

Are you using the powder? My Golden had them and they were horrible. Hot spots can crop up and be red and oozing in a matter of hours. The powder will dry it out in a day or so.

Don't give her the flipping chicken! Just dog food and treats and treats made with the same thing. Single protein and carb. When she gets hungry enough she will eat the new food. My dog is allergic to every protein she's had other than fish and that includes chicken. Chicken is a fairly common thing for dogs to be allergic to.

right now she is getting food with duck in it and sweet potatoes. and the same for treats. But for right now i have to mix her old food with her new food as I just made the change yesterday and today shes got diareah from the change I guess or the antibiotics not sure which it is or if its both. She loves the treats but when it comes to eating the food she just walks away. Bruno also gets salmon oil 1x a day too but other than that that is about it. I was told to switch her to a food that had limited ingredients so that is what I did and plan to stay this way. I am glad I am not the only one who has a dog who seems to be allergic to the world.

Give her an acidophilus capsule in her food. That will help with the diarrhea. It helps to restore the "good" bacteria in her intestines.

Just put it in her next feeding. If it's one of the capsules you can take apart, do that and sprinkle the contents of the capsule on her food.

ok that sounds easy enough thanks catt. Poor bruno woke me up at 3am crying. I took her out she went to the bathroom then I brought her back her and she still cried. I bet her hotspot is bothering her as she keeeps trying to lick/chew it even though the vet said 1 to 2 days it should stop shes on day 3 of pills so I guess tomorrow when they call me I will have to take her in and get her fit for not the e collar but the other type that will prevent her from licking it :(. Poor doggie.
