Those ads just kill me. Same thing was going on with the surplus Packard/Merlin PT boat engines...a little over $700 got you a brand new one in a crate. Today...$70,000 won't touch one.
The jet propulsion and combustion research lab I worked at back in the 80s had a lot of compressors and other air movers. Most were powered by electric motors to roughly 300HP each...lots of them. We had a dedicated power sub station to run all that crap. But what about brought me to tears was discovering they had a special unit powered by one of those Allisons...and when the engine had some issues they could not afford to mess with, they simply scrapped it.

Most of the competition pull tractors and monster trucks in the 80s used those engines.
Unlimited hydroplanes too....
