Also looking for a new church.

My family and I moved to Charles County, MD about a year ago. We have attended several nice churches. We currenty attend a nondenominational, multicultural full gospel church. We are looking for a family centered church that practices the gifts of the Holy Spirit. We have most often attended Assemblies of God churches but have found the ones in this area to be very small with very few family ministries. We need an active children's church and youth program. Any suggestions are appreciated.

You are in La Plata? There is a church called the Rock Church of La Plata. I have not been to it, but I have heard good things about it. I go to a church called Crossroad Christian Church (used to be Rock Church) in St. Leonard. We are interdenominational and charismatic. It would be a bit of a drive for you, but come and see us. Let me know if you want any additional information.

I forgot to expand on our children's programs at Crossroads. We have nursery and junior church from 0 to 12. Our youth ministry is active and has at least 2 retreats a year. Our children's programs are run by couples. We recently completed a major renovation adding more space for classrooms because we have grown tremendously. Some of the age groups are fairly large, so the classes are divided like this: 0-1, 2-3, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9, and 10-12. The teen ministry is from ages 13-17. Hope this helps. My family and I are also new to the area and looking for a church home. How have you fared so far, sisterchristian?

So far, I have visited Chesapeake Church and Full Gospel Assembly of God in Prince Frederick. Liked them both, but not the right fit for us.

I keep toying with the idea of writing a sort of loose "church review" on here for people like us! It would be a wonderful way to utilize this forum!

Though I know choosing the "right" church for a person or family is utterly subjective, it really would be nice to have a spot on here where new residents could discover the location, denomination, approximate body size, worship style, family/child/singles etc. orientation or programs; whether it's charismatic, evangelical, liturgical and so on.

So if you care to share your findings, I would be happy to share mine! Doesn't mean we are looking for the same thing, but it IS easier to divide and conquer!

Just my opinion, but I think each person needs to visit churches to form their own opinion. What is comfortable for one is not for another. I think the idea of reviews would put emphasis on the word "divide."

I go to the First United Pentecostal Church in Lexington Park. We have a very active youth program. I found my home there.

I am curious though, have you moved from one state to another state in a while? I had not moved in 15 years til mid-July, when we moved here. I am still trying to figure out where to find the ice cream toppings in the local Giant; trying to figure out why my basement smells so horribly damp; figuring out what my kids' new schools and teachers are about; we are even still trying to figure out what switches work what lights in our home, as they are illogically placed! You get the picture.

It would be WONDERFUL right now to have even the smallest leg up like having the roughest of guides to help me find a place for my family to worship. This move has been so exhausting physically and emotionally, I honestly don't have much left over for the church hunt.

And lest I sound like a consumer shopping for a church, I assure you we would like to give of ourselves as well.AND, I really don't care what denomination we attend either--I would not comment on that if I wrote a "commentary".

I would agree with your opinion about my desire for a church guide being potentially divisive if I was talking about commenting on preaching quality and other subjective things. My idea was to write about more about objective things like location, church size, whether or not there IS a youth program, whether the worship is traditional or contemporary or both.Things that can't be measured qualitatively, as I said.

Thanks for your input, anyway! Just wanted you to know where I was coming from. I don't actually have the time to write a 'guide'...I was just thinking of trying to make it easier for other relocated ragamuffins like myself..stumbling around looking for Abba's home for us!

Understand. Finding a Christian home is not always easy. I have had four since moving to Southern Maryland. Sometimes the church changes and sometimes our walk with God changes.

Get a dehumidifier for the basement. :huggy:
