Michigan Republican Rep. Justin Amash announced Monday evening he is leaving the influential conservative House Freedom Caucus, just weeks after he attracted the ire of his colleagues by arguing in Twitter posts that President Trump had committed impeachable offenses, Fox News has learned.

Amash, speaking at a Freedom Caucus board meeting, insisted his departure was voluntary. Amash said he did not want to continue to be a "further distraction" for the caucus, which is chaired by North Carolina GOP Rep. Mark Meadows.

At a town hall in Grand Rapids, Mich., late last month, some of Amash's constituents excoriated him for pushing for impeachment, while several others commended him for breaking ranks with his party and standing on principle.

"You talk about the Constitution and how important that is, but yet nothing that Mueller came out within this report, nothing that has been said about him and President Trump is constitutional -- it's been a smear tactic, because that's how the Democrats work," one Trump supporter told Amash.

Another woman at the town hall, Anna Timmer, criticized Amash for "grandstanding" and trying to raise his "national profile," while arguing that an impeachment inquiry would "tear this country apart."

IMHO he is grand standing to get his name out there ...... especially in light of the rumors he is considering a 2020 run as a Libertarian

What a waste of time and money. And he's pretty much scotched his reelection changes with this ill-considered move.

Meet Justin Amash, NeverTrump’s Newest Shiny Object

“As a conservative who has grave concerns about Donald Trump, I’ve arrived at an unavoidable conclusion,” writes Daily Beast’s Matt Lewis: “it’s time to draft Justin Amash for president.” It’s actually an easily avoidable conclusion. If anything, this infatuation with Amash is evidence of an increasingly frivolous NeverTrump resistance.

Now, perhaps enough voters are willing to support an exotic candidate to help sink Trump and elect the Democrat. Which is, of course, the point of all this. Even if there were a genuine appetite among conservatives to challenge the president, there are any number of candidates ideologically better suited to represent the Max Boot faction of the party. Joe Biden, for example.

We can act as there is some unprecedented partisanship behind Trump’s support, but there hasn’t been any genuine enthusiasm for sinking an incumbent since Ted Kennedy ran against Jimmy Carter in 1980. Even then, the effort failed.

Whose side do you think he's going to suck voters from, I can guarantee it's not going to be Trumps. Go for it, spread all those leftist votes over multiple candidates

another Jeff Flake?

The thing about Jeff Flake is that he was Gilligan to John McCain's Skipper. A little buddy. Amash is almost certainly getting paid to oppose Trump - there's no other reason for him to do it. So maybe he's Nancy Pelosi's little buddy, or wants to be.
