Amazon Bans Some Books

This is an excellent essay about an issue greater than conversion therapy. So even if you've got no interest in this specific controversy it's still worth the read. (I've read Burk elsewhere and enjoy his take.)

Here's the author's concluding paragraph (hopefully will whet your appetite to click over and read in full):

The sexual revolutionaries used to ask us, “How does my gay marriage harm you?” Well, this is how. They have gone from “live and let live” to “affirm our sexual immorality, or we will tar and feather you as causing the deaths of gay people.” It is a calumny and a lie, but that is where we are.

I have no dog in the conversion therapy fight - if gay people want to try and be straight, more power to 'em; likewise gay people who are fine being themselves. It's their business and none of mine.

I do, however, have a problem with book bannings. Amazon is the largest book seller in the world, and they are exactly like Google and Twitter and FB in that they claimed to be one thing while growing into this extraordinary behemoth, then the second they got there used their power to control We the People.

That is Stalin crap right there and they shouldn't be allowed to do this in America.

And therein lies the problem. Some of these fine people want to compel you to make their business yours.

This story interests me b/c there is a recent story of an Orthodox Jew therapist in NYC who is suing the govt (don't remember if NYC or NY State, but not important re: the larger point/context) b/c NY is one of the localities that has banned any type of conversion therapy. He claims that a number of Orthodox Jews in his community have expressed a desire to want to live in accordance with Torah. But he can't help them as assisting folks to leave a homosexual lifestyle isn't just somehow criminal, it is criminal.

Interesting that it's perfectly fine to "convert" ("groom," I think, is the more accurate term) kids toward wanting to be gay and/or encouraging them in their belief they are transgender, but the reverse (i.e., "going straight") isn't.

This story also interests b/c of a proposed law in CA currently being debated which will essentially compel pastors, ministers, etc. to affirm secular statements about the LGBT++++ lifestyle as being true. So, on one hand, the State infringing upon Church, etc. On the other, essentially forcing people to say that 2+2=5.

So much for so-called "personal autonomy." To me, that's another aspect of this being so Stalinesque. And thus, why I posted (this persistent infringement on personal autonomy and a disavowal of the "live and let live" maxim is in virtually every sphere/sector of daily life).

Michael Brown (not only of Townhall.com) adds some thoughts:

Speaks to a number of issues within the framework of Amazon's decision to "ban some books." Here's a snip:
Of course, I could produce scores of testimonies from former patients of Dr. Nicolosi who were greatly helped by his counsel. Some experienced profound changes in their attractions. Others were freed from shame and self-harm. That’s why he remained in demand until his sudden passing in 2017.

Why don’t these voices matter?

I could also produce literature from liberal psychologists like the lesbian activist Dr. Lisa Diamond, who argues strongly that sexual orientation is fluid.

But that is not the real issue here. The issue is one of banning books that violate certain guidelines, in this case, guidelines created by LGBT activists. Amazon is now playing a very dangerous game of censoring that which is not politically correct. Where will that lead next?

I don't always agree with Brother Mike (I do here, though), but his writing is always interesting and his reasoning always solid. As an aside, if theology is in your sphere of interest, Brown's "Answering Jewish Objections to Jesus" 5-volume series is quite good.

What ever happened to 'businesses should be able to do what they want with their business and it is our right to shop elsewhere?'

Or, is it just BIG businesses that should not be allowed to control how they do business?

We stopped using Amazon over a year ago. That was easy!

It's a little strange to say that people are born homosexuals and to then watch the "grooming" of kids in our schools.

Is it banning, or, refusal to stock and sell?
Call it what you will, but the net effect Is essentially a ban b/c even 3rd party sellers on Amazon are prohibited from selling these books.

Has Amazon stopped the selling of say, "Boy Meets Boy"? Nope
But, Amazon will defend some books
... AMAZON DEFENDS SALE OF PEDOPHILE BOOK
Exactly. And therein lies the rub.

Amazon has pulled a few more books.

I have some questions about some of the article's assertions, but admit to be drawn to these paragraphs (just before the end of the article):

In response to the removal, Voice of the Voiceless, a group representing former LGBT-identified persons, launched a Change.org petition Monday, demanding that Amazon reverse course as it accused the company of unfair censorship.

"We are outraged that a smear campaign by one individual (who stated here that he never read these books) could convince Amazon to censor all books, audiobooks, and Kindle material related to our experiences and viewpoints," the petition, which has garnered nearly 3,000 signatures, reads.

"For every major issue there are two sides to each story. For one side to be bullied and censored on every platform is counter to the values we have long held in common with Amazon."

Reports indicate that the man behind getting Amazon to discontinue selling the books was Rojo Alan.

The removal of other books come after Amazon pulled the works of Joseph Nicolosi, a Catholic psychologist who died in 2017. He is the author of several books on homosexuality in men and therapeutic approaches for persons with same-sex attraction.

Amazon Just Banned My Dad’s Therapy Books, Caving to LGBT Activists

On Amazon, you can buy almost any book written throughout human history—from the Bible to Adolf Hitler’s “Mein Kampf,” or even a book glorifying pedophilia.

As of last week, however, you cannot get any of Dr. Joseph Nicolosi Sr.’s books about leaving homosexuality—because Amazon just banned them all.

From 1981 until his death in 2017, my father was the driving force behind reparative therapy. He invented, refined, and used this innovative counseling method to help thousands of men overcome the effects of sexual abuse and other deep-seated childhood traumas.

These men told my father that his scientifically sound practices helped re-orient their sexuality away from obsessions with pornography, and helped them reduce their unwanted same-sex attractions.

The books Amazon banned are the continuation of my father’s legacy and of the changes that can take place through his methods. The books have hundreds of endorsements, from typical readers to past presidents of the American Psychological Association. In one comment, which Amazon has now “banned,” a man said the book “Reparative Therapy of Male Homosexuality”saved his marriage.
