College of Southern Maryland (CSM) Humanities Coordinator Dr. Christine Arnold-Lourie has been selected as one of 10 new members to serve the Faculty Advisory Council for the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), a national organization that advocates for community college excellence.
“AACC has selected 10 new council members from across the country to serve in this very important role,” said AACC Director of Professional Development and Student Success Strategies Tammy Reichelt about Arnold-Lourie’s selection. Arnold-Lourie’s appointment will run from Jan. 7, 2019, through June 30, 2020.
AACC is the primary advocacy organization for the nation’s community colleges and represents close to 1,200 two-year, associate degree-granting institutions and more than 12 million students. The AACC Faculty Advisory Council has the charge of providing strategic advice to AACC President and CEO Dr. Walter G. Bumphus and staff about the role faculty leadership can play in accelerating and scaling college-wide reforms, as well as being asked to provide content and/or suggestions on the design of professional development offerings for adjunct and full-time faculty with a faculty leadership focus.
“We are sure [Arnold-Lourie’s] insights and leadership will significantly contribute to the association staff’s decision-making process and its ability to serve the interest of all AACC member institutions,” said Bumphus, in his letter announcing Arnold-Lourie’s appointment to the council.
Arnold-Lourie is a history professor who has worked at CSM for more than 27 years, joining the faculty as a full-time instructor in 1991. In addition to United States history classes, Arnold-Lourie also teaches Women in Europe, The American Experience and The History of Race and Racism. She is the co-author, along with Susan Schaeffer and Julia King, of “Pathways to History,” a history of Charles County, published in 2008. She also holds an administrative position at CSM, serving as the college’s Humanities Coordinator.
