When I was in Scouts, we disposed of several. We actually had a flag ceremony where one of the senior Scouts would recall the history of the flag and with it folded correctly in a cocked hat, we would burn it while everyone remained silent until it was ash. You need a hot fire.

We never cut the stripes. I never heard of that.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars suggests this:

SUGGESTED PROCEDURE FOR INDIVIDUALS TO USE IN PRIVATE OR PUBLIC FOR DISPOSING OF A TORN, SOILED, OR BADLY FADED U.S. FLAG.

The Flag should be folded in its customary manner. (VFW Members: See current VFW Citizenship Education Program Chairman's booklet or VFW Ritual book.)
It is important that the fire be sizeable and of sufficient intensity to ensure completes burning of the Flag.
Place the Flag on the fire.
The individual(s) can come to attention, salute the Flag, recite the Pledge of Allegiance and have a brief period of silent reflection.
After the Flag is completely consumed, the fire should then be safely extinguished and the ashes buried.
Please make sure you are conforming to local/state fire codes or ordinances.

Contact either the VFW or American Legion - one of them usually disposes flags for the public on Flag Day.

Many great and useful lessons can come from scouting.

Several scout troops in the area should be more than happy to properly dispose of your flag for you as well. When my son was a cub scout they would have a flag burning ceremony each year and all the scouts who attended would put there names in a hat and two of them would get the grommets from the burned flag. They thought that was pretty cool.

Interesting. I researched several sites. The one you cite was the only one that mentions cutting the stripes.

This is the official United States code regarding the flag of the United States. This is a link to a U.S. embassy. I think they should be an authoritative source. http://stockholm.usembassy.gov/usflag/flag_code.html#USFC Look at section 176. It says nothing of cutting the stripes.

The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.

Have your local VFW retire it for you.

Or Local American Legion Post.

Maybe there should be a thread on proper display of the flag as well.

It peeves me to see (business owners in particular) a flag the size of a box car fluttering in the breeze at night, with no lighting or illumination at all. Or being flown during a rainstorm or bad weather (unless the flag is made for inclement weather) in order to show "patriotism".

The only time I have seen the stripes being cut was when it was part of a flag burning ceremony. I found it extremely respectful in the manner it was done and the words associated with the whole ceremony. I know it is one of the few times I have every seen young children quiet for 20 minutes without fidgeting and showing the proper respect throughout the whole ceremony.
