To everyone donating to the Red Cross today...read this first.

Charity Navigator Rating - American Red Cross

Compensation of Leaders (FYE 06/2011)

$501,122 Gail J. McGovern President, CEO

Seems like fair compensation for someone overseeing $3.4 Billion, running a surplus, and providing the services promised.

92.2% of their revenue goes to the programs. Isn't that one of the best there is? I know a lot of "charities" spend more on fundraising than actual work.

He gets over $500k per year and has a ton of other employees that do his work. Sorry, I just have an issue with this.

He'd probably make four times that in industry. It's less than a lot of other charities pay their CEO, and they handle far more money than any other charity.

If you want someone good to run a charity, you have to pay a competitive salary.

My cousin lives in OK. Her husband's niece lost their whole home. Instead of giving to Red Cross, I've gone through the house getting all the household goods /clothes/toys (she has a son that attends the elementary school that was flattened) etc that would have gone in a yard sale ready to trailer down. Other members of the family are doing the same. They're pulling out tomorrow with everything we've gathered.

Direct donation is the way to go if possible, but not everyone there has extended family that can help them. Even with the huge overhead, Red Cross DOES show up at these disasters and provide aid until FEMA can take over, so I would still consider them a viable option for those who want to give cash donations.

:yeahthat:

Socki, $500K may seem like a lot but it isn't. I'm surprised he's only paid that. Private sector he'd make well over 4 times that amount. Hell, the CEO of our company make 4 times that and we're only $100M a year.

Red Cross got a bargain. :yay:

I donated via text. My job pays my phone bill

We'll also go through what we have at home to see what we can donate that way as well :yay:

To put things in perspective.....

The first number is their 2012 salary (in millions), the second number is their 5 year average.

1. John H Hammergren = McKesson $131.2, $285.02
2. Ralph Lauren = Ralph Lauren $66.6, $204.06
3. Michael D Fascitelli = Vornado Realty $64.4, $171.8
4. Richard D Kinder = Kinder Morgan $60.9, 60.9
5. David M Cote = Honeywell $55.8, $96.1
6. George Paz = Express Scripts $51.5, $100.2
7. Jeffery H Boyd = Priceline.com $50.2, $90.3
8. Stephen J Hemsley = UnitedHealth Group $48.8, $169.3
9. Clarence P Cazalot Jr = Marathon Oil $43.7, $67.2
10. John C Martin = Gilead Sciences $43.2 $214.9

CEO Compensation, 2012

Side bar:
Gilead revenues in 2012 were $9.7 Billion
PriceLine's were $4.58 Billion
Red Cross = $3.4 Billion
Vornado's were $2.76 Billion (Their CEO made $64.4 million)

The CEO of Red Cross is getting Royally screwed...

To be fair, those aren't charities.

Does it matter? Red Cross has revenues of $3.4B that have to be managed.

You're comparing salaries of CEOs of large companies, to the CEO of a large charity.

I don't doubt it's about the same amount fo work, but if you're going to compare salaries of CEOs, you can't compare it to those large companies.

If you decide to send anything else, please let us know. I'd like to be able to done directly with clothes, toys, etc.

92.2% shows how well run the Red Cross is and he make less than most Professional athletes and overseas how almost $3,000,000,000.00 is spent.

I would not want to see someone running a organization like that for 50K

Point. Maybe they need a better CEO who makes $300M+ to get that money out of there quicker.
I have no dog in the fight as to what they chose to pay the CEO... I do, however, take issue with them soliciting donations in support of whatever big disaster happens to come about and then time and time again there are millions and millions of dollars donated to that specific fund and the money does NOT make it to the people in need. The first time I really paid attention was in the aftermath of 9/11... then Katrina... same story different disaster. Now the latest disasters are being handled the same way. It sickens me that the public is doing what they think will help the individuals in true need and the money is not tricklinig down as it should...:boo:
