Anemia

I know there are some nurses and hopefully even some doctors on here, so I need a second opinion :killingme

These are the stats: I've included the normal values in ( )

Hemoglobin 8.5 (11.5-15.0)
Hematocrit 26.5 (34.0-44.0)
RBCs 2.92 (3.8-5.10)

Serum Iron 13 (35-155)
Iron Sat 3 (15-55)
Ferritin 2 (20-291)

I can't remember from my lab days, so my question is, at what point is the H&H considered critical? What should a patient feel with an H&H of 8.5 and 26 with a Fe Sat of 3 and Ferritin of 2? Should this person still be alive?

What?!
Stoke level for hemoglobin is like 7, I think. Mine was 3 last year and I was told go right to the ER. Do not pass go, do not collect $200.

Not to be funny or rude or anything, but why aren't you asking your own doctor?

Why would I waste my co-pay $ to ask a question for someone else?

The earliest doctor appointment that could be made is for Thursday. I'm just trying to gather some info.

What is Ferritin?

Ferritin is a protein in the body that binds to iron; most of the iron stored in the body is bound to ferritin. Ferritin is found in the liver, spleen, skeletal muscles, and bone marrow. Only a small amount of ferritin is found in the blood. The amount of ferritin in the blood shows how much iron is stored in your body.

Your doctor won't discuss the lab results over the phone but he gave you the numbers?

If you were a cat or dog I think it could be time for the pink liquid. I don't know much about humans though.

The patient has an appointment with a specialist on Thursday.

I'm sure if it was bad enough, the doctor who has those levels would have said to seek care immed. Maybe the patient can Google those levels until Thursday. Dr. Kildare seems to be out of the office here today.

My H & H levels were 5 and 13 if I am remembering correctly and I almost died 2 days after having my twins... I had an emergency transfusion.

I was white as a ghost and had ZERO energy... Felt 100% better after transfusion and have not had any problems since. My pre-op blood work was perfect... I don't know what happened in that 48 hour period. I was a repeat c-section so I think that played a role in postpartum hemorrhaging.

You should finalize your will :huggy:
