Maryland Day is March 25. In celebration of Maryland Day, the Tri-County Animal Shelter is reducing adoption fees for Calico cats. During the week of March 26, through March 31 adoption fees for Calico cats will be $25.

Did you know that the official cat of Maryland is the Calico cat? On October 1, 2001, the Calico cat became the official cat of Maryland. Calico is not a breed of cat, but an unusual coloring occurring across many breeds, including Domestic Short-hair, Persian, and Manx. Virtually all Calico cats are female. Its colors of orange, black, and white are shared with the Baltimore Oriole (State bird) and the Baltimore Checkerspot Butterfly.

The Tri-County Animal Shelter is located at 6707 Animal Shelter Road in Hughesville. Shelter staff can be reached at 301-932-1713 or 800-903-1992. Adoption hours are Monday through Friday, 12 p.m.-5 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. To view animals available for adoption, visit www.CharlesCounty.org/ES/AnimalControl or www.petfinder.com/shelters/MD112.html to find your Maryland Day Calico.

Hurry to get your official feline symbol of Maryland...offer expires March 31!
