They are a fast flying, quick reacting game bird, actually hard to hunt.
The word sniper actually comes from a honorific given to bird hunters who successfully killed snipe.

There are a variety of real snipes in Maryland though aren't there? There was a really odd bird that I could see out of my bedroom window last year with a really strange way of walking. I thought it was a sandpiper - but the coloring was wrong and it wasn't the right terrain for a sandpiper. Although he hung around for days, I never did figure out what it was. The coloring and striping was very similar to the picture posted.

There is a Snipe season in MD.

Not to be confused with the Woodcock.
