AnnualCreditReport.com is the site to use for the often talked about required by law annual free credit report of which you are entitled.

You are entitled a copy of your credit report for free from each of the major credit reporting agencies (Transunion, Experian, Equifax). So the free credit report is actuallly three free credit reports.
Instead of getting them all at once set yourself up on a 4 month cycle. Pick one to get today, then wait four months to get another then another four months for the other. Start the cycle over again at that point.
Instructions to dispute entries on your report are provided by whichever agency you are dealing with at the time.
Word to the wise. You cannot have correct data removed. You can have incorrect data removed. Do not fall for these "We can clean up your report" groups out there as they can only have incorrect data removed and you can do that yourself with a little effort.
There is one scheme out there that has you apply for a new SSN and then build a new credit history on that SSN. In effect you use your new credit history and hide your old. This is called fraud and brings you more problems than your old credit report will.
