Another Husband Gets The Shaft

I was reading a story in today's Florida Times Union, and I wish I had held onto the hard copy version as I can't find it on their website.

The story is that a divoriced Tampa woman and her boyfriend went out to Las Vegas to get married. They had their family and friends in attendence, and had a traditional Jewish wedding ceremony and were pronounced man and wife by a Rabbi. They have plenty of pictures and video to document the event.

But when the woman and her husband returned to Florida, her ex-husband, who's been paying $5,000 a month in alimony, made a request to the court to have that requirement lifted. The woman went to court and said that although she had had what appeared to be a wedding, she was still single because she never signed or accepted her marriage license. And in court she had witnesses from her family come in and testify that they had been told in Las Vegas that although the event looked, smelled, and felt like a wedding, it was really a commitment ceremony!

Now, how anyone can look at this case and not see a clear case of criminal intent to defraud is beyond me, but not only did the judge not see her acts as criminal, he ordered the husband to continue paying the alimony. So this woman has her relationship blessed by her religion - known as a marriage in most parts of the World, is living as husband and wife with her new husband, and gets to keep getting her alimony because she's manipulating the system. Even worse, she's doing it with complete knowledge, planning, and premeditation.

Unbelieveable!!!

A man gets screwed over, it's news worthy. A woman gets screwed over, it's not news worthy. Why is that?

You're awfully angry at women today. Come to Pixie. :smoochy:

We all have to bear the burden of the poor choices we've made. I'm in no way supporting what this woman is doing. But he did marry her in the first place.

The story is too superficial at that. $5k a month is a lot in my eyes. He must have some decent cash flow if he was ordered to pay her that much. Maybe he screwed around on her and she's being vindictive now. :ohwell: Just not enough info to make a good judgement call.

Seems to me that the shoe's on the other foot - that women's issues and problems like this get much more attention than men's. But it could be that I'm biased, and you're biased, and the reporting isn't slanted.

In any case, I care a lot about protecting women and making sure they're treated fairly and with great respect. Since I'm semi-retired and not somebody's boss anymore, I don't get much of a chance at it, but that's my position.

So I guess we can agree to disagree on this one.

Things make the news when they're unusual. Bucky/Ray babe daddies are fairly common and not worth mentioning. Fake weddings in order to keep receiving alimony are uncommon and, therefore, newsworthy.

I think alimony is a crock anyway. I can see it if it's an older couple and the wife never worked or developed any job skills and the husband just wants to leave her high and dry. But for young women, get your butt out there and get a job. Quit living off your ex-old man.

And you have to wonder about a guy that would let another man support his wife or girlfriend. We have a situation like that in our neighborhood, where the ex-husband is fairly well-to-do and the woman gets a buttload of child support. The new husband doesn't work, except for odd jobs - why should he? They have an enormous "income" from her ex. :ohwell:

Child support is different than alimony. I think all men should have an obligation to pay for their kids. But you shouldn't have to carry an ex-wife around your neck for the rest of your life. ESPECIALLY after she remarries.

Absolutely. I shouldn't have compared child support to alimony. Basically, I was telling Bru to get his balls back from his wife. :ohwell:

Do you think they're ganging up on us?
Hmmmmm.... after reading that websites "FAQ" page... looks like a "grass roots" thingy may just be happening.....

What can bitter-men.com do for me?

Here at bitter-men.com we are devoted to providing a safe, woman free area (unless its a sponsored event, like ask-a-chick), where men can share their stories with other like minded men in a safe, reassuring, non-judgemental setting. We are here to listen, and for others to learn from our experiences, and are trying to provide a more light-hearted approach to the male bitterness syndrome (MBS for short). In other words, nothing, we are here strictly for entertainment purposes. We may get a chuckle out of others misfortunes, but we will also learn and hopefully prevent it from happening to us.

Is bitter-men.com gay?

Certainly not, although we still don't like women very much. We are learning to talk about our issues without getting an ulcer, or weeping uncontrollably. We still haven't mastered the whole "talking to chicks" thing yet. Maybe we are still a little (lot) bitter.

Actually I'm having a great day and a great week. Tonight I'm getting off work, going out into 68-degree weather, going to the Jacksonville Landing to hear Boyz II Men and Huey Lewis and the News give a free concert outside of Hooters. I'll be eating wings and living the life of Riley. The only downer this week was the loss by my Steelers. :bawl:

Vrai and I had a very, very, very lengthy debate a few years ago about who's best to get custody of kids, the mother or the father. The debate started after a woman posted how her kids' custody had been awarded to their father and were living in a foreign country, and she felt that she had more rights to the kids than her husband, or something like that. There was an automatic assumption that the mother should get the kids even though there was no other facts provided or discussed... just her I'm The Mom statements.

I don't care if an injustice is being perpetrated by or against a man or a woman, an injustice is an injustice... but let's make sure that it is an injustice. Since we don't have forced marriages in this country, marriage is then a matter of free will between two people. If one of those people decides to bail, then that's great. There should be an equitable division of assets, and if someone tries to cheat or defraud the other, the courts should pounce (and they usually do.)

In this case, what should it matter if the guy is rich, or if he was fooling around and that led to the divorice? How does that justify what this woman is doing? She is stealing $5,000 a month under false pretenses, aka, theft by fraud/deceipt. The husband may be a loser, a cheater, a dog... but that's not an excuse for her behavior even if it's true.
