I got call about a large duck that is coming in and a followup call revealed that they also have a JRT that needs a home. Something about moving (transfer?).

More to come later :coffee:

What kind of duck?? M or F??

Not sure of sex or breed yet. This duck came from a Spring 2013 hatch from the Amish. The duck was an indoor pet for a child. The duck lived in plastic dog crate and went outside to play every few days. The duck is very tame and would be an excellent child friend/pet.

Obviously we need to do some rehabilitation to introduce the duck to a pool of water to practice. I have no doubt you and BG would make good duck parents.

PS - They thought it was a large duck, but this is a normal sized duck. Right now it is going from the water to the food and back and forth......

can anyone tell what type/sex duck this is?

It's tail looks like a Chicken tail! Whatever she/he is, it's cute! The wings look small too.

Yeah waiting to get more details and pics on the dogs. Yeah there's another one I found out, a mastiff/lab mix. Both dogs are friendly and social I was told. I asked them to hold the dogs while we work our magic to see if we could arrange a new home for each of them. The guy has a kid and has to move and can't keep the pets.

The duck is experiencing the cool night outside for the first time. I feel bad that the duck is alone. I wanted to tuck the duck in bed with me but poultry poop too much at night to be good cuddle partners lol.

Who didn't see this coming? Poor BG...:coffee:

lucky her, we had another offer to take the duck - we think it's a SHE, and she's considerably underweight. She's going to need a few weeks at the minimum of extra food, unlimited water to drink, and pool training on how to be a duck before she can go join an existing flock at a pond. She just doesn't have sufficient weight presently to be able to handle cold temperatures well.

Most people who take in an unusual pet (box turtles and rabbits come to mind) have good intentions, but they tend to under-feed them. I let my son have a box turtle many years ago (found outside), when we took it to the Nature Center in Clinton, MD to release it, they said the turtle felt underweight, but because it was September, the turtle could have enough time to fatten up prior to hibernation for the Winter. I felt such a butt-head for keeping the turtle after that. AND I think there are laws against it?

This duck does not have water-resistant feathers, can not stand w/o teetering forward/backward (weak leg muscles), and doesn't seem to know how to paddle in the water. It's looking like this duck may be in rehab for a long time before being physically able to fend for itself at a pond on a farm. On a good note the duck is very friendly. I discovered that ducks have several pointed toenails at the end of their webbed feet - OUCH!

PS - now that the duck is getting sunshine regularly, I am sure that will help in addition to the duck food. I think I'll give the duck another hug when I get home.

Gee I may be able to spend all day with the duck tomorrow if the gov't shuts down.

Did you see where it said you MUST increase ".... beyond the normal duck diet."
