Mark 8:1 During those days another large crowd gathered. Since they had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to him and said, 2 “I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. 3 If I send them home hungry, they will collapse on the way, because some of them have come a long distance.”
4 His disciples answered, “But where in this remote place can anyone get enough bread to feed them?”
5 “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked.
“Seven,” they replied.
6 He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. When he had taken the seven loaves and given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people, and they did so. 7 They had a few small fish as well; he gave thanks for them also and told the disciples to distribute them. 8 The people ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 9 About four thousand were present. After he had sent them away, 10 he got into the boat with his disciples and went to the region of Dalmanutha.
11 The Pharisees came and began to question Jesus. To test him, they asked him for a sign from heaven. 12 He sighed deeply and said, “Why does this generation ask for a sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to it.” 13 Then he left them, got back into the boat and crossed to the other side.
Let me ask you.... is feeding 4,000 men to satisfaction, on 7 loaves of bread and a few fish an everyday occurrence? That's not even counting the women, children, and slaves that were there. They never counted the women, children, or slaves back in the days of Jesus. Women were a commodity almost. We didn't have a say in anything, unless we could coerce "our man" to vote the way we wished. Women didn't get the vote until almost 2,000 years after all this took place. So, we weren't counted in this crowd. This evangelist [Mark, known as John Mark, was an evangelist] would have us believe the men were all alone on the hillside with Jesus. That is not the case. There were at least double that number on the hillside.... most of the men would bring a woman or a slave or both. Notice, I'm still not counting the children.
After the meal, the clean-up crew picked up twelve baskets of broken bread! They started with seven loaves and after the mass feeding, they had twelve baskets of bread to carry with them when they went to the boat.
Now check out verse 11. After feeding 4,000 men to satisfaction on seven loaves of bread, with twelve baskets left over, the Pharisees wanted a sign!!!!!
Note.... seven is supposed to be the perfect number of God. Seven means complete, or so I was taught in Sunday School.
Note... twelve is the number of tribes of Israel.
Jesus said "no sign will be given". I think in today's lingo, "if that's not a sign, well you won't get any better than that".
Jesus didn't cause mass shootings. Jesus caused mass feedings. First 5,000 off of a little boy's lunch, and now 4,000 off of seven loaves and a few fish.
Call the guard!
It's Another Mass Feeding!
