Anti-virus and Spyware programs

Ok computer geeks, what's the best one? Got something on my computer and don't know what it is or where. This thing puts a "desktop.ini" file everywhere and screws with the system registry. For anti-virus I have AVG. Don't have a Spyware / Adware program yet. Downloaded and ran Spybot, but it did no good. Whatever it is, it messes with the anti-virus program and won't let me run a scan. I'm about ready to wipe the Hardrive and start over.

I have used Vipre for little over 8 yrs ... since it was Counter Spy an anti adware software ... now a full blown solution
