Any Road Racing fans out there?

Volunteer Flaggers Needed for Club Races at Summit Point Motorsports Park.

The allure of motorsports--its probably what drew many of us toward owning the cars we own and joining the community of motorsports fans.
Some of us feed our “need for speed” by driving in Oval track, Drag races, Autocross, motorcross or other motorsports events—or even by competing in car shows or rally events. However, many would rather not participate in motorsports competition due to the constraints of cost, time, or the risk of wear, tear and damage to our cars. There is another way to be involved in motorsports and it requires nothing more then a weekend of your time while providing the very best view of the racing action without actually sitting in a driver’s seat.

The Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) Washington DC Region is always looking to recruit volunteers to work during its club races. The most critical positions to fill are those in the Flagging and Communications specialty.

The SCCA organizes, trains, and equips its flaggers for not only its own regional club races at Summit Point but also is tasked regularly for pro sports car or road races nationwide such as ALMS and Grand Am races at Daytona , Sebring, Watkins Glenn, etc. As a volunteer flagger you will not only be trained properly by the SCCA but have the option to pursue this adventure further with the SCCA if you wish. Its very addictive--ask any of the fellow race fans form Southern Maryland that also spend time at Summit Point Flagging for the SCCA.

What are the benefits of volunteering at SCCA and other Club Races?

Dinner banquet on Saturday evenings with refreshments
Lunch tickets
worker rewards
Free camping with or without hookups at Summit Point
Reduced rate SCCA membership fees

But most of all, your reward is the camaraderie of working with like-minded racing enthusiasts while ensuring the safety, sportsmanship, and fun for the racers, teams, and spectators.

For more information on SCCA Club Racing in the Washington DC Region please go to WDCR Home

For those interested in volunteering please contact me or one of the SCCA Flag Chiefs responsible for the corner workers at these events, Mark Hillyer. We will need to know your level of experience (none is required), and when you might be interested in volunteering. Mark will ensure those with little or no experience can attend training and be assigned to work with the more experienced corner workers. He can be reached at markscca@gmail.com .

The Washington DC Region of the SCCA is hosting its Mid Atlantic Regional Road Race Series (MARRS) races on labor day weekend at Summit Point. Come to spectate or come to flag--either way you'll have fun.

SCCA road racing is a very exciting form of motorsports and has multiple different classes of racing with everything from showroom stock Miatas to open wheel Indy style cars and even big bore NASCAR-style stock cars. All of the classes are extremely competitive. Summit Point SCCA Club racing is on the Summit Point Main Circuit, a challenging ten turn 2.7 mile course with elevation changes that has hosted many famous drivers and even celebrity drivers such as Paul Newman and Tom Cruise. Summit Point also includes two shorter road course tracks plus a kart track and also hosts rally cross and drifting events. Volunteers that work the SCCA races at Summit Point are also allowed to sign in one guest for free.

How did you arrive at that?

You sound curious about it. Obviously you are a race fan or you wouldn't be here. So if interested let me know.

I just happen to be new to this forum stuff so maybe I don't fully understand all the proper ways of posting something but this is a legitimate request from me to seek others that may not even be aware that within a two and a half hour drive we have a terrific opportunity to be a fan or take the next step and volunteer or even drive on a one of the East Coast's finest road courses.

And yes-I know of many in St Mary's and Calvert that drive, club race, or work at events at Summit Point but we are always looking for more to join our fun.

I had to quit offroad racing due to back injuries. Miss it tremendously. What classes and types of cars are allowed to run at Summit?

Thanks ! I'm on track now.

I see what you did there......:killingme

Do wish I had more time, would love to do this. Since my tire/gas budget wont allow me to do it, I am sad. Road course racing is the best fun you can have in a street car. Have never raced, but have got to do laps at a couple of places in cars provided, no worries about tires either, man, what a blast.

Summit Point offers many different options for high performance driving on the tracks they have. The Motorsports Park is actually owned and operated by Bill Scott Racing. BSR has its own track day events throughout the year including the Friday At The Track (FATT) series and Twilight at the Track series (weeknights). Some is instructed driving and some is solo for advanced drivers.

The SCCA perhaps has the most events at Summit Point and includes a Performance Driving Experience (PDX) weekend event about five times a year, Rally Cross, and the monthly Club Racing (Mid Atlantic Road Racing Series and Majors Series). Club Racing offers classes for just about every type of car but this is for racing in prepared race cars and only for those that have attended a drivers school and earned a SCCA competition license. Check out the Washington DC Region website WDCR Home for more detail.

Numerous car clubs (Porsche, Audi, MB, Corvette, SVT/Cobra, etc.) also offer club races, time trials, and what is known as High Performance Driver Education (HPDE). For HPDE many of these clubs require only that your street car pass a pre-event tech inspection by a qualified shop, an event grid tech inspection, and a proper and recently manufactured automobile (not motorcycle) full face helmet. Beginners are instructed in the classroom and on the track and as you move up in competency and skill you will be promoted to the various levels and drive solo. Many HPDE events also provide valuable skid pad instruction.

For information on Summit Point go to Summit Point Motorsports Park

As you can probably tell I am a long time race fan (of just about every type of auto racing) that has just recently discovered the thrills of driving my car in HPDEs as well as volunteering as a novice SCCA Flagger at Summit Point and I bet that if others in our area were even aware of Summit Point they would also want to participate--or just go as a spectator.

Although a much further drive then Summit Point, Virginia International Raceway (VIR), located near Danville Virginia is one of the finest road courses in the world and they host all types of HPDE events and racing including the NASCAR K&N Series East this weekend. Paul Newman once said, "if there is a heaven on earth--its VIR", however, Carroll Shelby had less nice things to say although he was one of the first winners at VIR back in 1957 when it opened.

I've been following road racing since I watched Wide World of Sports on ABC as a kid.
Back in the early '60's they showed the Monaco Grand Prix, and I was blown away by a street race through a city.

I've worked corners, done timing and scoring, and finally achieved my SCCA Regional Drivers License.
In the next season under my belt, I was issued my National License.
I went on to race professionally for a year in IMSA, and had my FIA License.

Three kids and a mortgage ended my racing career, but I still instruct with the Audi club.

For those of you who love any form of auto racing, you owe it to yourself to not only check out Summit Point, and Virginia International Raceway, but to make it to Baltimore over the Labor Day weekend to see the IndyCars and American Le Mans racers pound around the streets!

Great fun!!

Whew!...I read through a lot of the 161 pages of TT rules on that site. Lots to digest.

Great fun!!

I am attending the Baltimore GP next weekend (Fri-Sat only) to see the ALMS and GT3 Challenge Cup racing but unfortunately not staying for Indy. There are a handful of racers in those series with local/regional ties including the class leading TPC Racing Team from Jessup Maryland, and Spencer Pumpelly and Tommy Milner from Virginia. I will also be down at VIR the following weekend for a Tar Heel Sports Car Club HPDE since I am missing the PCA/Audi Club DE on labor day weekend there. I hope to meet you out at Summit Point soon. We could use you for the PCA Club Race (and advanced DE) as a Flagger.

Not going to make it this year, but is this sort of package a good deal?

That seems like a reasonably good deal, comparable to some of the other Car Corral deals with other car clubs (I have Porsche Club Car Corral Tickets). I'm guessing the SRT hospitality tent and its benefits are better then the other clubs being that SRT is the lead sponsor for the event. One thing about street courses--the view of the racing will not be great no matter where you sit. However, the overall event is a great time for any car nut. The Car Corrals are adjacent to the ALMS Paddock and the teams are very accessible as they prepare their cars for the various runs. The Vipers sound and look awesome and they have a win already this year so they have as good a chance as anyone at Baltimore. Plan for next year, however, it won't be on Labor Day Weekend because of the Navy-Ohio State football game at M&T Bank Stadium.
