The only thing keeping me from putting in an order for one is the projected $30-something thousand bucks to buy one.

 That's the cost of new vehicles... I stopped and looked at mid-range pickup trucks; I didn't see one under $30K, ranging up to $50K. For a frikkin' pickup truck.

Considering all the new technology that goes into the Volt and the fact that it's not mass produced yet on the scale as other cars, the price really isn't bad.

I was looking at new trucks too and was floored by the cost. My paid for 2001 Dodge is running just fine.

That was my take too. My paid-for 2000 GMC is fine. I'll invest a few $$ in it and run it for a few more years. I'll take the money I would have used on the truck and look at a new bike instead...

When they build an electric vehicle that will go 150 miles (gotta have a traffic cushion) between charges, cost <40K, and a life expectancy of >200K miles on the batteries, THEN I will be all over it.

Well, from what I gather, that was a "projected" price, so who knows what the initial MSRP is gonna be.

Based on what I have read about the car, the gas engine kicks in and out for accelleration but also to charge the batteries when in use.

If they could improve the design so you wouldn't have to plug it in at all; and be a self-sustaining vehicle; with the exception of gas and oil for the engine; perhaps they might be able to get away with 30-40K per unit.

GM Reveals Price Tag for Electric Chevy Volt

The highly anticipated electric-powered Chevrolet Volt will carry a $41,000 starting price before tax credits, $5,000 more than the top-selling sedan from General Motors' luxury Cadillac brand.

GM said Tuesday it has begun taking orders for the Volt and would also provide a leasing option for the vehicle as it launches in a handful of U.S. markets starting with California.

...

U.S. taxpayers who buy a Volt will qualify for a federal tax credit of $7,500. Other states, such as California, are offering additional tax incentives.

After accounting for the federal tax credit, the net price of the Volt will be $33,500 for most initial buyers.

The automaker also will offer a three-year leasing option on the Volt, allowing customers to carry it for $350 per month after a $2,500 downpayment.

Power with Control
Well, MSRP is 41, but keep in mind, we are in your corner, and will pitch in $7500 of our cash to make it only a little over 33K. Your welcome. :sarcasm:

As far as engine, the engine never actually drive the car, nor does it kick in for more power, like the Prius, it only kicks in when your battery charge drops, it keeps the charge level up so the batteries can drive the car.

Charge time on 120 volts is 8 hours, on a dedicated 220, which us taxpayers have graciously decided to fund the first 4400 of for deserving customers (isnt it great when the guys who make the car have an in with the govt handing out all this incentive cash?:patriot::sarcasm:) to get these installed.

How good a car is it? Cant say, nobodys really talking.

So if I pay say 25,000 for a NICE Nissan ALtima with a gasoline engine, that gets 25 MPG.. how many miles do I have to drive before the Chevy Volt pays off?

Figure $16000 for gas (difference in 41K for the Volt 25K for the Nissan).. at say 2.50 a gallon.. So that gives me 6400 gallons of gas to equate to the Volts cost..

Before I get ANY benefit from the VOLT (and this is assuming I pay ZERO for gas in the VOLT) I could drive the Nissan 160,000 miles with the money I saved on the sticker price..

Yeah.. Nissan gets my vote.

Look at how young and sincere he looks. That job will age the hell out of you.

Well, I remember seeing pictures of the Presidents since, and including, Jimmy C.; before and after their terms in office. Can you imagine how Barry will look in 2012?

I suspect he will look hot.
He will be living in Kenya with his relatives shortly after losing to whoever runs against him.
