My wife and I are in the process of trying to adopt a great dane, and one of the things we were talking about was Pet Insurance. With a dog this large I feel it is a very good idea, but I have had no experiance in the past with it. I have found 2 companies over the web, but was wondering if anyone could maybe recommend a company or tell there experiance with dog insurance.
thanks

I should look into it. I have a dog with health issues and the vet bills are quite expensive but I wonder since I know about the condition, would that be considered pre-existing? I've never looked into it though. I'd be interested in what you find.

so far I have the sites www.petinsurance.com and www.petcareinsurance.com.
I did a basic quote for a 3 yr old great dane and got back between $29 - $45/month quotes depending on the type of care I wanted. I also was in a special category for large breed. Just not sure if it is the way to go. Reliability and service are questions I have. Will keep a post of what I find.

Thanks. You know, when I get my little coupons back when I shop at Safeway I notice there's an ad on there for Pet Insurance. Never paid much attention to it, though.

You will have to look into what the insurance will cover and what they will not. I know with a lot of smaller dogs, it will not cover the hip problems, knee problems, ect. Just research everything before you get it. In my case it would not be very wise because what could happen to my dog, they won't even cover.

The July 2003 issue of Consumer Reports included an article on pet insurance. Their feeling was that if you put the equivalent of a premium payment into a savings account (or other interest-earning account) that you would be way ahead of actually paying the premiums to a pet insurance company.
