anyone heard of:

Loper

Animal Poor!
a female pom not going into heat for years?

First off, these are not my dogs :) but I do know them personally.

Scenario: A white female pom that was a "spayed" rescue that is about 6 years old. A 7 year old Min Pin that is not fixed. The Pom has never had a heat cycle or shown any signs of such. These two dogs have been together for almost 5 years. Today the owner woke up to 5 puppies. :cds:

I have 5 rescue dogs and dogs most of my life but all have always been fixed and the females, before they were fixed, showed obvious signs when they went into heat. Granted all my dogs are big dogs, the smallest being 70 lbs.

Do smaller dogs take longer to mature or is this just some freak thing?
Could the female only have been partially spayed?

WoW! That is freaky!

Whether it's true or not- I don't know but I was told that Poms usually cannot give birth alone and often need a C section. I believe the average size of a litter is small like 2 or 3. For her to have 5 pups on her own- WoW!
I would love to hear what a vet says about this.

This isn't going to be too much help except to add a little relate-ability to your story. And I don't know all the technical stuff that goes along with it but my mom has two girl poms. The older one is 12 and has had what my mom considers a regular heat cycle. She has also had a couple of litters of puppies. The younger one is 9 and my mother suspects she went into heat once. Again, she only suspects this but isn't sure. She is only sporadically around male dogs and has never had any puppies. My mom has expressed some concern over it all but not really looked into it any further since she isn't interested in any more puppies.

I know virtually nothing about small pups. LOL But I saw them with my own eyes about an hour ago. 5, 2 brown, 2 white, and 1 white with brown ears. Tiny tiny! I would guess mom is maybe 8-10lbs same with the min pin. They are all umm suckling.. :) and seem healthy but again I have no experience with day old pups. I'll keep you posted because I suppose I'll have to be vet payer for these little ones.

more like big Sucker :killingme.. but FF, we both know how that is... :) do you have any supplement type stuff for moms with puppies? I have to come by and get Nupro and more candles.

Supplement for Moms w/ pups? Don't think so- but yes for the pups themselves. Regular Nupro could be a boost for her...
Did you get any of the Evergreen candles when we had them? Think there may be one left in Solomons; maybe some room spray as well.

no Crash said Callaway was out of them when he went last. If there is one at Solomons I'll take it. :)

:yay:

My friend has poms. When her female had pups, she was rushed to the vet and had to have an emergency c-section. Even with the emergency c-section, one (of a litter of two) didn't make it. She knew as soon as the pup went into labor, so it wasn't like she waited and then took her in. The pups were delivered within hours of labor starting. The doc just said poms are the type of dog that don't do well with delivering pups themselves. He attributed the death of the one puppy to size. The surviving pup was much larger, and must have taken most of the nutrients from the mom while she was pregnant.

OP
Good luck with the pups. Sounds like the first biggest step is already past if she delivered all 5 naturally. Congratulations.

Please keep us UTD with this. Not only do I know someone that's looking for a tiny dog, I may be in 8 weeks as well.

Just a cautionary word of personal experience, which others may disagree with or mine may just be an isolated case. Poms may not be the best dog of the small dogs to have around small kids. Mine bit children and so do my mother's poms. When my then-pregnant friend got a pit bull breed we looked up the statistics of them biting vs pom's biting and were pretty shocked at some of the stories involving small children.

I should probably add that my poms will bite at just about anything that moves too quickly or in what they would consider a threatening manner around them. Adults heed that warning very well, much moreso than children. Otherwise, we keep our dogs away from situations that would potentially cause any conflict.

I had one that never bit. He just would not potty train. I tried everything suggested and the little ####er would crap right in front of us.

My little girl weighs 5 lbs and she had regular heat cycles before I got her fixed. I would think the pom wasn't properly spayed.

IMHO, little dogs are the worst with kids. Kids love them, but for whatever reason little dogs don't like kids. I think it's their quick random movements and grabs. Even my mellow boy is uncomfortable with kids. If he's being petted by a child I always supervise and am ready to swoop him up the minute he starts acting "uncomfortable" because it could result in a dog bite. I can only trust my little girl around teenagers. Little dogs are also fragile and break easily. The "I want to hug him and squeeze him" mentality can actually break their little bones. Trust me, I sometimes want to hug and squeeze mine, but they run and hide from me until the moment passes.
