Has your son had a physical recently? I was just wondering because I was thinking of taking my 10 year old in for a physical at the doctor's office and I was wondering what usually happens during a physical for a boy his age. Does the doctor do the turn your head and cough thingie to check for hernias, etc at this young of an age? Thanks in advance

My son is twelve. His Doc is in St. Mary's. He was not checked for a hernia. Although the Doctor asks me each time if I would like him to check my sons privates, just a quick glance over with me sitting in the room. This is voluntary.

Physical and more-

A physical examination is an important aspect of staying healthy. Physicals should be performed yearly and often for adolescents before entrance into sports. The physician will examine the eyes, ears, nose, throat, mouth, abdomen, back, legs, arms, and thyroid gland. In addition, the physician will complete an assessment of growth and evaluate pubertal changes. Screening for hypertension, scoliosis, and obesity may be performed. Approximately 5 percent of male adolescents have a mild curvature of the spine. Curves greater than 10 degrees should be monitored by your adolescent's physician until growth is completed.

*Another important part of this examination involves the examination of the genitals and the scrotum. During the physical examination, the physician will examine the genitals, including the penis and testicles. The physician may ask the patient to cough while examining the scrotum. Although this can be embarrassing for an adolescent male, it is necessary to help evaluate the presence of hernias or tumors....the exam will be brief and not involve
excessive contact.

Good luck Mom!

I have a 12 year old son...but have had 3 older 10 year olds too..and have a 7 year old up and coming to 10........the cough in the hand isnt so bad, but that doesnt usually happen until around 13 or so.....the doc may want to have a fleeting glance to make sure all is as it should be, but up until 12/13 you can be in the room with you son!!

I remember having the hernia check as early as 9, but that was a football physical which may require more. It's a very benign check, so there's nothing to worry about it.

Also, you have the right to be in the room with your child for everything short of things like surgery until they are 18.

Yeah you do, your right! But most pediatrician's will ask that you step out after your kids reach "the age"..so they can have patient/Dr confidentiality!!
Thankfully I have the confidentiality with my kids, and they say they want me in there!
