Anyone Know What This Is???

I recently noticed two huge bluish-black bees outside my basement door. They look like huge mud daubers and their wings flicker when they crawl. They make a very loud buzzing sound when flying. Today I noticed one is nesting in a crack between the blocks of our retaining wall. I saw it go inside carrying something. I was right near the nest entrance but it did not try to attack me. I dislike bees though and need to trim the grass in that area. I have never seen this type of bee before. I kept trying to kill it with spray but it would just fly away and come back a few minutes later. Any ideas on what kind of bee it is?

I just smashed the crap out of one of those bees. They look like overgrown yellow jackets. St. Mary's County has some strange insects. :twitch:

Have you tried checking the internet? GOOGLE "Bees" and see if you get a photo of something that resembles what you saw. Then you can get information on whether they are aggressive or how they can be killed.

And it provides a great show for people who can't see the bee.

I know exactly what you're talking about. I hate them critters. They're a type of wasp if I remember right and they're everywhere. I don't remember their name right now and am trying to look them up.

This is the family they belong to:

http://www.everythingabout.net/articles/biology/animals/arthropods/insects/wasps/spider_wasp/

Most spider wasps are black, metallic blue, or reddish and measure from 1 to 5 cm (0.4 to 2.0 in) long. The wings range from clear to smoky-gray or bright red-orange in color. Their extraordinarily long hind legs distinguish spider wasps from other wasps. Spider wasps are usually seen walking on barren ground or in tangled undergrowth searching for prey. As they walk, their wings flicker and their antennae tap the ground. They often break their restless walking with short flights.

I haven't found a specific picture of the exact one you were talking about.

There's a type of wasp, I think they're called Mud Wasps, that like to live in the cracks of walls. We had problems with them last summer and we found out that they had built a nest in a couple of our vents coming into the trailer. These things are black and they look just like a wasp or very large bee. I've never been stung by one but they look very intimidating. I was able to use Black Flag Wasp killer on them. If you spray right at them they die in about 10-15 seconds.

They might be called Mud Wasps. I just know I don't like ANY type of wasp. I always have a can of wasp killer within easy reach on my front porch. I still have a hole in my arm from getting stung by one at my grandmother's house when I was a kid.

I'm confused-as usual..first Gemmi said there are 2 huge bluish-black bees that look like huge mud daubers, then Pandora said her bees looked like overgrown yellow jackets...now damnit what's goin on here??

They're talking about two different ones. The overgrown yellowjacket-looking ones I used to get quite often at my old house and they LOVED the fruit on my trees. They were also very aggressive.

I had to laff last nite-as serious as bee's can be it t'were funny-1st a black n blue bee, then Pandora's yellow bee-WHO says bee's don't buzz at nite! :jameo:
Morning y'all!!! :howdy:

I didn't like those mud daubers much until I broke open one of their nests and found it crammed with dead spiders. Now I let them do their thing. Rather have them around than spiders.
