Appliance donation

Is there any organization in St. Mary's that would take a used dishwasher? I just bought a new one, but the old one still works. There is some slight damage; the cable connected to the springs that act as a counterweight to the door broke. So the door feels very heavy now when you open it, but it still washes dishes just fine.

I already stopped by the Habitat for Humanity store; they no longer deal with dishwashers.

I'm thinking that the old one is going to the dump, but I hate to throw away something that works. I'd put a classified ad out for a free dishwasher, but I'm installing the new one tomorrow and that is the only day I will have access to a vehicle that I can haul it. (in-laws driving down to help me install)

When I had my new appliances delivered (from Sears), the delivery guy said there is some group that uses old appliances to teach kids how to do repairs. He said he'd take my appliances to them for practice. Maybe if you call Sears, you can figure out which group it was and how to get the dishwasher to them.

Freecycle website where people will reply to your post wanting to pick it up because thier old ones is broken. It is better having stuff going to dump when you still can use the items that aren't broken.

Which county are you in, so you can sign up for Freecycle?

Also, Restore place on Great Mills Road in old fire house should be able to take your dishwasher. You can also donate them to thrift shops as well.

Thanks for the suggestions. Sadly, it did wind up in the scrap metal pile at the dump. I had already checked out the Habitat store before I posted the first time. They had bad experiences handling old dishwashers, which is why they don't accept them anymore. After pulling my old one out from the countertop, I could tell why. It would have been a liability in anyone's kitchen. Lots of corrosion and worn out parts just waiting to flood the kitchen of the person who took it from me. Or catch it on fire.
