Seoul, South Korea -- Still no definitive word, but there are reports a South Korean hostage in Iraq is alive. The Arabic TV channel Al-Arabiya says the man's captors have extended a deadline they had set on his life.
The network provided no other details.
The kidnappers had originally said they'd behead the contractor by sunset Monday unless the South Korean government agreed not to deploy troops to Iraq. Seoul refused to meet the demand.
Meantime, the chief of a South Korean security firm says his Iraqi business partner has contacted the kidnappers, and confirmed that the hostage was still alive, after the deadline had passed. He says the Iraqi was trying to negotiate the man's release.
