(TAYLORSVILLE, MD) – An armed man who went to his estranged girlfriend’s place of employment last night in violation of a protective order was taken into custody after state troopers talked with him for hours and convinced him to surrender peacefully.
The 38-year-old suspect, who had been staying with his mother who lives in Taylorsville, Md., is currently undergoing hospitalization in a secured location at the Carroll Hospital Center. Troopers have obtained a warrant charging him with violation of a protective order, being a person with a felony conviction in possession of a rifle/shotgun, being a disqualified person in possession of a rifle/shotgun, and illegal possession of ammunition. He will be charged and identified upon his release from the hospital.
Shortly after 9:30 p.m. yesterday, troopers from the Westminster Barrack responded to a call for a violation of a protection order in the 4100-block of Ridge Road, near Taylorsville, Md. The victim, who was at work in an assisted living facility at that address, reported the suspect was outside the building and was armed with a shotgun.
The first trooper on the scene saw the suspect sitting on a curb outside the building. He established phone communication with the suspect, while calling for additional assistance. The trooper observed the suspect threaten suicide with the shotgun during communications.
Lt. Rebecca Bosley and F/Sgt. Vinson Smith, the commander and assistant commander of the Westminster Barrack, both responded to the scene and took over communications with the suspect. The Maryland State Police Special Tactical Assault Team Element, or STATE Team, also responded to the scene with an armored vehicle.
Lt. Bosley directed troopers into the back of the building to secure the residents inside. Several rooms near the front of the building near the suspect were evacuated and troopers stayed in the building to protect those inside, including the estranged girlfriend of the suspect.
With the scene secured and the armed suspect isolated, Lt. Bosley and F/Sgt. Smith continued talking with the suspect. About two and one-half hours later, the suspect surrendered and was taken into custody. No shots were fired and no one was injured. The suspect was unable to make direct contact with anyone in the building during the incident. Troopers recovered a loaded shotgun.
Due to the time the suspect had spent in the cold, EMS personnel responded to the scene. The suspect was transported to the hospital for evaluation and treatment.
