Asian woman brutally beaten in suspected hate crime as security guard does nothing to help

A racist attacker brutally beat an Asian woman who was walking to her church in Midtown on Monday morning — as a security guard in a nearby building watched and did nothing to help, according to police and footage of the incident.

The unidentified suspect spewed anti-Asian statements as he punched and kicked the 65-year-old woman on West 43rd Street near Ninth Avenue at about 11:40 a.m., according to cops.

“F–k you, you don’t belong here,” the brute yelled at the woman, according to sources.

Video footage of the assault provided by police shows the suspect kicking the victim to the ground — then stomping her in the head several times as she was down on the sidewalk.

Do Not Look Away From Evil


The other is the evil of the bystanders.

The second kind makes even sicker. The apathy, the indifference, the nonchalance, the passivity in the face of human suffering — as if such an attack is a casual occurrence; as if she is a figure in a video game and not a real human being shoved and kicked and stomped on— says something very disturbing about what’s happening in our culture.

Some on social media have pointed out that the guard would have lost his job if he’d gotten involved. That private security guards are strictly barred from intervening in such situations because of liability. I’m sure that’s right. (According to the building’s management company, the staff who witnessed the attack “have been suspended pending an investigation in conjunction with their union.”)

I’d also say: Imagine that this woman is your mother. Really picture her, as I am my own mom, who is about the same age as the woman in the video. Now picture her beaten to the point of hospitalization in broad daylight in the middle of Manhattan. And imagine that grown adult men several feet away watched that happen to her. If your answer is still “but liability,” I’m really not sure what to say.

Man Arrested For Brutal NYC Attack Was On Parole For Killing His Mother


A man arrested for a brutal attack against an Asian woman in Manhattan this week was reportedly out on parole for stabbing his own mother to death in 2002.

Brandon Elliot, 38, who lives in a homeless shelter not far from where the attack occurred, was arrested early Wednesday and charged with assault as a hate crime, police said, according to the New York Post.
