States to sue EPA over 'damaging' environmental impact of residential wood-burning stoves

Ten states are suing the Biden administration for allowing consumers to continue buying and using wood-burning stoves, claiming the appliances are more damaging to the environment than what a previous assessment found.

A 60-day notice of intent submitted last week accused the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of failing to review and ensure emissions standards for residential wood-burning stoves and, as a result, allowing the continued sale of appliances that could worsen pollution, attorneys general from the ten states wrote.

"If newer wood heaters do not meet cleaner standards, then programs to change out old wood heaters may provide little health benefits at significant public cost," the letter read.

The states involved are Alaska, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Vermont and Washington. The Puget Sound Clean Air Agency also joined the states in the lawsuit.

Expect the Biden EPA to roll over and cave to the lawsuits, as the Dems would NEVER get a ban or restrictions on Wood Stoves passed, instead this will be used to ' create ' case law for restrictions ... This happened multiple times under Obama Administrations

Maybe they should ban forest fires.
I have lived in Maryland my whole life and wood stoves have never turned the sky as hazy as a Canadian forest fire..

I certainly never knew that my homes State was suing the EPA over wood stoves. Maryland is one F'ed up political state. Too many refugees from Gubment AA jobs and S.E. Washington that insist on electing Democrats.
I wonder how this crazy fight against wood burning stoves started, We have a rather large Amish and Mennonite population that use wood burning stoves , and many others also use them. Wood has been around for cooking and heating since the first man discovered fire.

Get together a bunch of "woke" ass wipes and every day they will think of something else to ban. Wood stoves, Fossil fuels, and even the sun.

This is total bullshit. They're now coming for woodstoves, because TONS of people were starting to use woodstoves MORE due to the high costs of electricity and propane gas!

happy to be living
Our woodstove, from Chesapeake Chimney, replaced a huge "wood hog" probably Amish built; that came with the house. The new one is efficient and is maintained every year.
We own a splitter and pick up wood for free and season it at least two years before burning it. I paid a woman $100 once for a crap ton of oak because people were shaming her on FB for not giving it away. Anyways, we have enough wood for the next two years or more and I beg some government a$$hole to tell me I cannot heat my house this way!
I may add the gun safe is also in the basement!

Again, our "Democracy" (Fantasy word overused by Democratic idiots---definition....Representative of the people's will)...turns against its own people with laws NOT based upon the consent of the governed. Not based on science (is it "settled?")...and intentionally damaging to middle class & poor.
Fine job Democrats....Have you figured out where all the 'rage' comes from yet??

Is the government really going to come to your house and check if you're using a wood stove?

With this - and the paltry contribution to the pizza ovens in New York City - I can't tell if this is : Dems with too much time on their hands; environmental idealists who want to outlaw everything; persons determined to compel people to use and consume what they WANT them to; or a combination of some of these.

Because - again - you want to stop climate change? Start with CHINA. Start with INDIA. Two huge nations, with huge populations who are destroying the atmosphere and utterly destroying the oceans with their incredibly filthy runoff.

A good 1st step would be to stop buying anything made in China, India, etc.... Stop the demand, lessen the need, slow the production.

Yes, easy to say, hard to actually practice. I've tried a self-imposed ban on Chinese goods, but it's next to impossible. The US has to step up and get back into production. But that will never happen... it's not "green" to have factories in the US.

And 'round and 'round we go.

THIS is something I don't get at all, and even the most ardent greenie has to acknowledge ---

It doesn't make the world "greener" to shut down oil refineries, oil pipelines, natural gas and so on HERE, in the United States -

IF WE SUBSEQUENTLY GO ON OUR KNEES to Venezuela(!!) and Saudi and BEG THEM to make more - so we can use it.
At least, HERE, we can control how cleanly it is produced.

It doesn't make sense to vigorously object to making things here - where it does cost more but we don't run sweat shops AKA slave labor - and the plants themselves don't destroy the world's oceans and pollute the world's air, because it's made in CHINA where they don't answer to anyone.

And - because we STILL DESIGNATE THEM as a "developing country" even as their economy overtakes our own - we give them broad latitude to pollute as much as they please.

They operate on childlike, thinking.

If they don’t see it, it doesn’t exist.

As I understand it, this is not about banning wood stoves, it's about improving emissions standards on new ones that are sold. These states don't want to incentivize people's trading in their old wood stoves for new ones if the new ones are no better than what they're replacing. Our tax dollars go toward these incentive programs. These states just want the EPA to do its job and make sure the new stoves are improving air quality, not keeping it the same. As far as I can tell, no one is coming into your house to take your wood stove away.

I grew up in Pittsburgh with steel mills belching out smoke than turned our red brick house coal black. I'm happy to breathe clean air. 😊

I bought a new furnace that was allegedly energy efficient, the same with a new window air conditioner, and a new refrigerator.

I can tell you i still burn the same amount of fuel oil and my electric bill didn't go down a nickel.
IMO the advertised energy efficient is a boat load of Bullsht.
