From Dec. 2018 through April 2019, Assistant Professor of Photography Tristan Cai participated in an artist-in-residence program at DECK, a premier arts space in Singapore that showcases contemporary photography. As a result, Cai is featured in the media company OZY’s story focused on DECK (Discovery Engagement Community Knowledge) which offers “three galleries, an analog darkroom, a library and a studio, all free from government control and censorship, a rarity in this artistically conservative city-state.” The story can be found here: https://www.ozy.com/good-sht/the-gallery-giving-an-artistic-middle-finger-to-censorship-in-singapore/95830/
In a related story from Reuters, Cai is quoted in the story “Bans, censors, jail: perfect storm for gay arts in Singapore?” which focuses on a thriving LGBT+ culture scene in Singapore’s conservative city-state.
