Sarah Latchney, assistant professor of biology and neuroscience, has recently been published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) titled, “B cells migrate into remote areas and support neurogenesis and functional recovery after focal stroke in mice.”
In this article, Latchney and colleagues used advanced brain imaging techniques to examine the role of peripheral B cells that infiltrate into various brain areas associated with long-term motor and cognitive function following stroke. Stroke is a leading cause of death and adult disability, with more than half of all stroke survivors experiencing long lasting motor deficits that impair daily function. This research investigated the neuroprotective role for B cells in neurogenesis, neuronal survival, and recovery of motor and cognitive functions.
