Argelia González Hurtado, associate professor of Spanish, has been awarded a $19,136 Connection Grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). In collaboration with colleagues from the University of Lethbridge and St. Francis Xavier University (StFX), this grant will support a colloquium at StFX from July 1-3, 2025. Titled "Cinematic Mothers: Mothering and Motherhood in Contemporary Latin American Cultures," the event will critically examine and challenge traditional conceptions of motherhood.

Scholars from six countries and diverse academic backgrounds will participate, including Jeannine Ortega from the English Department at St. Mary's College of Maryland. The colloquium will bring together early-career, mid-career, and established scholars and students from women’s studies, film studies, literary studies, Indigenous studies, sociology and anthropology. Discussions will center on the foundations of mothering theory in Latin America, focusing on the intersectionality of race, gender, class, identity, territoriality, politics and psychology. The event will explore mothers' social roles, both individually and collectively. This colloquium marks the first step toward a future publication on the topic.

In addition to SSHRC funding, the event has received support from St. Francis Xavier University, the University of Lethbridge and the Asociación de Hispanistas y Latinamericanistas de las Provincias del Atlántico, bringing the total funds for the colloquium to $30,414.
