Emek Köse, associate professor of mathematics, has been elected chair of the Applied Mathematics Education Committee of SIAM, the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, one of the largest and most influential organizations for applied mathematics in the world.

“I am very excited to serve the mathematics community in this role and have a voice to advocate for equitable access to applied mathematics,” said Köse.

According to the website, the purpose of the Applied Mathematics Education Committee is “to advance the development and practice of educational programs, courses, and resources in applied mathematics. This will include but not be limited to organizing the biennial SIAM Conference on Applied Mathematics Education, maintaining a curated web-based repository of resources in modeling, computational and applied mathematics, and mathematical sciences, including the applications domains.”

In her new role, Köse’s first priority will be to work with the SIAM Applied Mathematics Education Committee to make sure its activities and the vision provided is current, relevant to the needs of mathematical and the scientific communities, and forward-looking.

“My other, equally important priority is continuing to be fully committed to diversity and inclusion in the applied math education community. As an educator first, I will not be changing the mathematics done but I am determined to do everything I can to change who does mathematics,” said Köse.
