After reading here for several years, I know a couple of you have autistic children. I was wondering if you had a hard time potty training and maybe some suggestions you could offer to help with the process..

I know someone who had an autistic child and they did 2 things to potty train. 1 was everytime the child did number 1 or do a number 2 the potty they got a sticker to put on a chart. "The 2nd they did was they gave him m and ms and every time he peed on the pot he got 1 and every time he pooped on the toilet he got 2 they only had to do it for a few weeks then the child was like wow if i am good and go potty good things happen. After they took him off the candy they continued to do the stickers for a while and when he went through a period of having no accidents at night or during the day they took him and let him pick out one small toy for doing so well and that was all it took and no accidents ever again after that.

That's very typical for ANY parent potty-training ANY kid. I would imagine the parents of an autistic child would train the kid like any other parent but it just might take alittle longer because of the autism.

We have tried everything to potty train this little boy. He is not even remotly interested in the potty, he knows when he goes, even takes his diaper off but will not go on the potty at all. We have tried all the normal stuff, games and prizes but nothing. We have been told this is normal for Autistic children. Just thought maybe someone else has been through it and could help..

hate to resurrect old topics, but had to put in my 2centavos

this was one of the obstacles for me to get over as a father of child I lost to autism (classic autism; severe speech delay; got it it couple months after she got 8shots at once). Coincedence?:
mercury poisoning vs autism

i had asked a "professional" in the field on how to get past this obstacle, and I was told "when youre ready, she'll be ready."

i was insulted, as if i never spent hours already on working on the issue, i wanted to punch the lady's teeth out. Like I enjoyed paying for diapers for a a 5yr old taking a dump in her diapers in public and dealing with toddler diaper rash and trying to constantly hide the bulky diaper in her clothing. what nerve she had, i thought. but her words were so true.

the cure was to take a week off of work, monitor her and get her comfortable on the toilet, something she hated. if i wasnt syncronized with her "signals", it was a failure for that day/night, so monitoring was key. i eventually had to bring her books, magazines, toys, food, even a little 10inch TV to get her comfortable, and played some games. Several days into it, she finally did it. not only was I glad, but so was she. repeated that several times, shes been diaper free for couple years now

I don't let my kids get multiple shots at once. I ask to do them at different times. Some doctors don't like it. I found one that did. I believe there is a link between giving some many shots at one time. I also changed my sons diet. My children don't have autism but my son does have some behavioral issues and learning issues. He didn't talk till he was 3. I wish the best to all the families who have a loved one that suffers from autism or any learning issue.

I have a wonderful grandson with asbergers syndome, High functioning autism.

It was and still is a difficult task. He will be 6 this September. His daytimes are better with an occasional accident not so frequent. Over nights are a problem still and will be for? I know every one of these children are different. The key is not to get discouraged or show this in any way in front of the child. They read us better then we think they do. We would take him every 15 minutes and slowly lenghen the time period. no drinks past a certain time at night and take him directly to the potty when he woke. He has tremendously improved. Just takes patience and support.

Under obamas new health plan, you wont have a choice not to have the children get so many shots at once.
You will do what he damn well tells you and you will like it. Or, you will be fined, and your children taken from you.

But, I agree with you on the shots.

All that being said, I do know one child that has autism, His mother posts here from time to time. I can honestly say that I would have little problem having him as a son (now that the hard times are over) he may well be one of the most polite kids I have ever had the pleasure of meeting.

There is hope.

Nothing has been proven that autism is caused by vaccines. On a related note, I found this study to be interesting. Toddler brain difference linked to autism - CNN.com

May I ask why your child received 8 shots at once?

I have two children the most that they have received at one time is 3.

I'm also curious about that. My son is still really young, just went for his 4 month visit. He received 2 shots, just like at his 2 month visit. I'd like to know why a doc would find it necessary to do this, if it's not too personal a question for lamini answer.

Although I don't know for certain that shots do indeed cause autism, I wouldn't want any child to get so many shots at once unless it was absolutely necessary. I'd rather not chance it. The studies that have been done in recent years have made me think about the possibilities.

Potty training for autistic children is a gradual thing. If you child is 3 and is starting to wake up from nap/overnight dry, offer him the potty. Also offer the potty periodically during the day. No pressure, no rewards, just gradual. Eventually it'll click.

This to me is not right. I believe in vacations but not so many at once.

I have an autistic child. I don't believe that vaccinations did it. The mercury was taken out of them years ago. The medical community has proven time and time again, there are other possible causes. If you don't have an autistic child - please keep your comments about them to yourself. Parents of autistic children are already strung out with stress.

I read SoccorMom's comment as saying that no one sould get 8 shots at once. You made it sound like she said something about Autism. I didn't see that.

Or are you saying no one should post in this thread at all if they don't have any dealings with an autistic child?
