Hungry startup uses robots to grab slice of pizza

"We're going to eliminate boring, repetitive, dangerous jobs, and we're going to free up people to do things that are higher value," said co-founder Alex Garden, a former Microsoft manager and president of mobile game maker Zynga Studios.

Inside its commercial kitchen in Mountain View, pizza dough travels down a conveyer belt where machines add the sauce, spread it and later carefully slide the uncooked pies into an 800-degree oven.

The startup will soon add robots to prep the dough, add cheese and toppings, take pizzas out of the oven, cut them into slices and box them for delivery.

"We automate those repetitive tasks, so that we can spend more money on higher quality ingredients," said Julia Collins, Zume's CEO and cofounder. "There will always be a model here at Zume where robots and humans work together to create delicious food."

So the consumer complaint of tomorrow isn't "I found a hair in my pizza" It'll be more like "I found a diode in my pizza."

I thought I heard recently the FAA says drones cannot fly over populated areas or something.... That pretty much precludes drone delivery.

Found this:
https://www.faa.gov/news/press_releases/news_story.cfm?newsId=20515
The new rule, which takes effect in late August, offers safety regulations for unmanned aircraft drones weighing less than 55 pounds that are conducting non-hobbyist operations.

The rule’s provisions are designed to minimize risks to other aircraft and people and property on the ground. The regulations require pilots to keep an unmanned aircraft within visual line of sight. Operations are allowed during daylight and during twilight if the drone has anti-collision lights. The new regulations also address height and speed restrictions and other operational limits, such as prohibiting flights over unprotected people on the ground who aren’t directly participating in the UAS operation.

..
I know, have one of the FAA certificates myself. For hobby flyers we're supposed to avoid flying over crowds and spectators. FAA rules. However, local governmental authorities might bar them from flying over populated areas..

Rules for commercial drone flights are different and incomplete at this time. A work in progress.

That's why I bolded the above, non-hobbyist operations, ie commercial. And yes, I realize full commercial is still in draft.

For NOW ...... you think if Bezos starts spreading money around the FAA won't suddenly reevaluate the matter

the poor dad
what is the proper thing to do with these new delivery robots? Can you get them unstuck and charge the robot company a pull-out-of-the-snow fee? I charge a minimum of $50 to yank your dumbass out of the snow, if you ask nicely. Otherwise it's $100.
