Baby possum - paging Inkpen

The wife found a small possum in an empty recycle bin in the yard and she's concerned that it's lost its mommy. I think it's old enough to be on its own. It's probably about 8-10 inches from nose to base of tail. She tried to put it back in the woods, but it came back and crawled into the bin again and is just hanging out in there. I told her to just put the bin on its side and leave it out by the woods and the thing would probably be gone in a few hours. What's your advice?

Until you get in touch with Inky, you can give it canned cat food to eat...they love it...but he sounds like he's large enough to be on his own.

Maybe he's just frightened because it's daylight and he's hiding until he can head out again after it's dark. Are they any predators around that would bother him ...cats/dogs...until he can make his escape?

No predators around. She carried the bin into the garage because it's darker there and the neighborhood kids were getting a little bit too curious. I think we'll just let him chill there until it starts to get dark and then put the bin out in the edge of the woods. He's way too big to be riding on momma, so I think he'll be fine. Wife just wants an expert opinion.
