When one of our major banks refuses to do business for political reasons....

Chilling.

Businesses making decisions on who they want to do business with is "chilling"?
That's actually a fair question. Bakers should be able to bake, or not bake, whatever cake they want. Actors should be able to choose to work, or not work, where they get paid to go. Banks should be able to choose to provide services to, or not provide services to (and get fees from) whomever they want.

Good libertarian position to take!

Let them do business with the Vegan Meatloaf, Hemp Clothing and Fair Trade, Organic, Leed Approved Homeless City Tent Makers.
"Hey, man. The fire you're cooking the vegan loaf with is catching your hemp clothes and tent on fire...."

(in Tommy Chong voice...)"Hey, man. Don't care, man."

100%.

I always thought banks liked to pander to people who have money, mortgages, investments, good credit, etc. BOA has made an interesting choice of clientele to pander to and I'm curious to see the long term outcome of their decision.

Remember back when they removed the need to have a SSN to get loans, so they could loan to illegal aliens?

This isn't new. It's been their MO. By "America" they mean all of North, Central, and South America.

Pretty sure that's called being true to your roots. Since the majority of what became Bank of America was the San Fransisco based Bank of Italy, founded to help Italian immigrants who had trouble using traditional banks (because they were undocumented.....)

I was not aware of that. Good to know.

Either way, I tried to cash a check there one time from a customer that used their bank. They'd previously bounced checks before, so I wanted cash to deposit in my bank. BoA refused to cash the check, because, "we're not in the business of cashing checks unless you have an account here." I asked if they seriously wouldn't stand behind a check written by their customer, and they said they were very serious they wouldn't cash a check for me, regardless of who the bank was that backed the check, unless I had an account.

I almost opened an account to cash the check and then closed the account immediately, just to make them go through all the paperwork, but decided my time was worth more than that. I've refused to do business with them for some time, so them refusing to do business with people does not seem so outside the real of just doing business.

Perhaps it's just to whitewash over their racist past?

I wasn't thinking about the illegal aliens as much as I was the progressive movement in general.

No joke, I had this exact same thing happen to me with Crocker in the early 80s, and with Wells Fargo in the early 2000s (actually was the same bank, since WF bought out Crocker).

Up. Identified. Lase. Fire. On the way.
I left BOA about 15 years ago when, after it bought up some military community-focused banking institutions & promising to continue providing the same services but now under the BOA banner, BOA reneged on its promises and canceled those services. Some of which were significant, some less so, but it was a serious breach of faith and public statement.

As far as my banking experience with them is concerned, BOA is a POS organization. So not at all surprised by this.

WRT this BOA announcement, I agree with the libertarian position (i.e., BOA is more or less free to do whatever it wants to do). But libertarians (at a minimum) also should be looking at the bigger picture.

And that's why I absolutely agree with Vrai: it's chilling.

If one doesn't see/understand why what BOA is doing here is a problem in the larger scheme of things, then one's eyes/brain aren't/isn't working.

Or one is simply a totalitarian. Here's a hint why (yup, from a different sector, but the dynamic in play is similar/the same):

Sorry, in advance, if you feel insulted. But these comments are not directed at anybody in particular. If the shoe fits, however,....
