Beagles As Pets

I am considering getting a beagle puppy. This will be my only pet and the first I"ve had in about 10 years. Are they good house dogs? Are they easy to housebreak? Also, what is the besy way of doing this such as using a crate? I work 8 hours a day and my son will be going back to school soon so there isn't anyone there for most of the day.

They are good dogs especially with kids. I was always against crate training until I tried it and it is the best way when you have to work. It becomes their comfort space also.

Do you have a beagle?

They call me ... Sarcasmo
You need to do a lot more research before you make the decision to get a dog. Beagles are hunting dogs (primarily rabbit) and they can be very active and like BS said are superb escape artists. Ask a few beagle owners about their experiences and then decide if this is the right breed for you.

But wait, there's more...
Beagles are great pets; however, if you are only going to have one dog, you might consider another breed. Christy is the one who convinced me to get a playmate-companion for my beagle to help curb his destructive behavior (accidents, chewing things up, etc.), and she was right. If you are gone during the day for long periods, they need a buddy to keep them company. :yay:

Should be Huntin
I love Beagles. As a kid growing up we always had a few for rabbit hunting. My cousin has one now that is the greatest dog I have ever seen. My ex used to do dog training and competitions, her and her friends were showing off thier dogs one day and all the little tricks they could do. I borrowed my cousins Beagle and showed them all up. She sings on command and they best one you can put a chip on her nose and she will stay there for hours until you tell her to get it.... also works for holding a beer :yay:

Ours was a beagle mix, but she was the best dog. Aside from escaping now and again, she learned tricks very quickly, was house-trained in a matter of days and was never destructive. We got her as an 8 week old puppy from Animal Welfare League.

I have had several beagle mixes, never a purebred. I would never knowingly adopt another mix (and definitely not a purebred). Beagles are very sweet dogs, and great with kids, but they are too much trouble for me. Their nose gets them into too much trouble. Our dogs used to get into the trash all the time. We had one that chewed her way through a wooden cabinet to get at the food in there. They are a pain when they're outside, because they listen to their nose, and not to you. They are very sweet, and very cute though.
If you get one, I definitely recommend crate training.

Did Buffy and Jody come from the show Family Affair or something like that. Back in the 60,s. Didnt like that show much. Jody was gay and Mr French made me want to puke.

I had a beagle, she was older and had died. They do like to run so I agree with everyone on needing a fence but she never was destructive but I didn't have her as a pup either.
