beagles...

In addition to looking at dachsunds, my daughter has seen a beagle on petfinder that has caught her eye.

How are they as family pets? Are they ok as inside dogs? If I leave the tv on when we leave the house will they still howl really badly?? LOL

He is cute... but I have NO information about beagles and google is all over the place. Anyone own one that would like to share some personality traits/challenges that come with the breed? If we did get a beagle, we'd go the rescue/shelter route since there are SO many of them in shelters. How big do they typically get?

thanks for all of the information...

Neighbor has 3 of them, sometimes they can bring up quite the howl but not too often or to bad and it doesn't bother us. A definite must is an escape proof fence, if they get out look out they will get on a scent and follow forever.. Our neighbors that have them, their property backs up on the woods and a big field and when the rabbits and deer go by their fenced in yard the dogs do what is natural to them. They are great dogs. They do not get that big, 10 - 16 " in height and around 20 lbs. to 30 lbs. max. Here is a good link that provides a lot of information about the breed.

We have a 1 1/2 year old beagle/daschund mix and he is the best of both worlds! He was a rescue, but I think you can look for them under "doxle".

They are great pets...very loving and sweet..they are however notorious for getting lose and running away. they follow scents without a second though. A fence is a must..and the more yard the better..oooh and they are diggers so the fence should be below ground as well...they will dig under a fence and they will escape..not good leash walkers either unless they are strictly trained which can be difficult..they are very food motivated and prone to obesity...my suggestion is a beagle mix..they still look cute..but it tames some of the unwanted characteristics..

We rescued ours from a dumpster where some one dumped them. :tantrum:
:howdy:
We have some beagle mixes one is mixed with dashound.
They dig.
They sometimes do run off if they get loose.
Bunny chasers.
Very freindly.
Mine don't howl like some hound dogs do.
But they do bark at strangers walking down the street....Or strange cars. ...Or stray dogs.
We are looking for a home for one of our dogs.
Ours do fine on a leash.
FENCED YARD A MUST.
Mine dig but not out of a confined area.
Mostly for moles... use grub killer to get rid of the moles and no digging.
Ours does fine in the house supervised or with doggie door to a fenced yard(crate at night).
You can't pet them enough.
They hoover up any and all food they can get a hold of.
Cannot feed free choice food. (THEY LOVE TO EAT EVERYTHING) not cats.
if they were horses they would have coliced a long time ago.

wharf rat - those are all adorable! We don't have a fenced yard yet but have been talking about fencing in our backyard for a while now, so that won't be a problem. We were going to do that before getting a dog anyway...

sounds like a beagle might be an option for us, along with a dachsund... now to hold my daughter off about getting a puppy until I can get the house a little more 'ready' Maybe I'll just keep an eye on the shelters and see when one comes in that might be a good fit for us, though we are pretty easygoing and good pet owners so I don't anticipate any problems.

wharf rat, you aren't giving up one of those adorable doggies that you posted are you?? My daughter loves the second and fourth ones... LOL That fourth one looks a bit like a dachsund.

Darla's our only foster beagle at the moment. She's been with us for a little longer than we expected. She's not the most playful dog but she's a lover/lap dog if you've ever met one. Unfortunately, she may have epilepsy (she has an appointment this Monday).
We found her in the middle of a seizure yesterday.

There's always beagles at the shelter and if you haven't already, you can check out beagle rescue of somd. Meet Our Beagles

thanks for all of the information...

IDK what my Beagle is mixed with but he looks all Beagle and is ALL LOVE! He wants to sit in my disappearing lap when I sit on the floor. He gets along with the other pup, other dogs, and the cat (surprise!) and I have a feeling he is going to LOVE the baby. Like any puppy he is a bit cheeky and likes to check out the trash (they have that Beagle nose that gets them in trouble) he can be a little stubborn (especially when is comes to food that little piggy) BUT he is learning quick. The only time I hear him get loud is when he is playing, running around with other dogs playing chase, then you hear his classic "Beagle Baying", I love it. My boy is 7 months old and he is 22lbs of course he is taller and a mix (?) but they're medium to smallish size.

I grew up with Beagles in my home, they were hunting dogs and I have many memories as well as pics of the pups and I. I loved snuggling with them in their bed, I fed them biscuits and never have they snapped at me, not even during feeding time.

The downside to Beagles, they run if they get off the lead. Our beloved "Stunad" got hit 3 times before he died (from being hit). This past summer a friend's Beagles was hit while he was out running about the town.

My suggestion, if you get a Beagle and have to leave him/her make sure they are crated or sectioned off to one part of the house, preferably one without anything they can chew, this includes socks, underwear, shoes, leather, plants, rocks, box spring, new kitchen chairs, trash, carpet.... hmmm, what else has he chewed in my home.....

Either way, good luck on your decision and THANK YOU for rescuing instead of buying.

My Woody, laying in his favorite spot....

Great dogs. We have one. She's a picky eater and only eats when we are home. Doesn't bark, only howls when we get her really excited (trying to make her howl because it's so cute). Was really bad about running away if she got loose the first 3 years, now we yell and she lays down. Can't ask for a better dog. Very loving. Oh, and she has never dug in the yard, but we tie her to a long line, no fence when she wants out.

thanks everyone - I think we are leaning toward a beagle, or maybe a beagle/dachshund mix.

Is the shelter down here somewhere that you can just go look at the dogs? Is it open tomorrow?

I know that some people love their beagles, but we had 2 beagle mixes and I have sworn I will NEVER again own a beagle or mix.

They frequently follow their nose instead of commands. Their nose gets them into SO MUCH trouble. We had one that chewed through a wood drawer to get into a bag of Hershey Kisses (ate the whole bag and pooped out the foil). She climbed up onto a table outside to get a pan of dressing that was cooling (the night before Thanksgiving..my mom was livid). Ate holes through the fiberglass garage door. Got into the trash so many times we had to build a wood frame with lid around the can. Got into the compost pile to find goodies. She would eat anything and everything.

I do think they're cute though.

Oh, and I hate dachshunds too. But good luck finding a dog!

I'll admit that we're going through something like this with our youngest beagle (different scenarios) but I totally understand what you're saying.
If he was the first beagle through our door it would have been the last.
Sadie roped us in though.

I can agree with most of the above even the dachshund part.

Woody eats rocks. I picked out most of them in my yard but I SWEAR he digs for them. He helped himself to my cilantro a few days ago.... don't know why he doesn't touch the basil

The other morning I found out the cat had vomited in the laundry room. Not because I saw it but because Woody was in there eating it :barf:

He is rotten and I love him. He is a little piggy and a lover, sooooooo snuggly. Cracks me up that he still tries to climb onto my nonexistent lap :lmao:

My 7yr old Beagle is a monster! lol. Lives for food, he's smart and sneaky. Kills me in vet bills- seizures, ear infections, allergies, foot chewing, butt dragging, cataracts, etc. He is a very spoiled rotten 42lb boy and I wouldn't trade him for the world.
