What should we use?
It seems like every thing we check says to use something different?

I always used blankets and towels and washed them frequently with baby-type detergent.

Don't use any type of shavings.

That's basically what we have set up. Towels in a crate. The crates in another room away from the other 4 leggers. Some sites say it's a big :nono: but others say that's the way to go. Just want things to go as smooth as possible. She's right around 60 days and looking like she's gonna pop!

I use blankets and wash daily...I think Happy uses shavings of some type and has good luck...guess its whatever is easier for you...needs to be changed or cleaned often though...good luck..

I use blankets and wash everyday.

I went to the thrift store and raided their supply.

Towels/blankets would certainly be the easiest. For all the dog experience we have, puppies will be totally new for us. Every resident, rescue or foster dog has been at least 2 months old before coming here. Haven't seen my wife this anxious in years.

Look my ass glows!
What about shredded paper-not newspaper, but the stuff from the shredders we all own??

Because we have a small dog, we use a plastic kiddie pool for whelping and as the nursery. The sides are all together and curved so no issue of a puppy getting stuck in a corner and they can't get out for at least 5-6 weeks. We put down newspaper and then potty pads and then soft blankets. But be careful with towels because dogs can get their nails snagged in the loops and can possibly rip off a nail or toe. It's also possible to get stuck in a towel because towels are apt to rip. For this, I use baby blankets (receiving type) with all my newborns.

What type of puppies are you having?

We're not sure who/what the father is. She's a rescue I found at the dump.
A friend of ours mentioned the small pool idea as well. Baby blankets were also brought up.
Off to the store.
Should be fun trying to find a kiddy pool this time of year, but I like that idea.

I've got a kiddie pool in the basement. And some puppy pen panels if you need. Shredded paper does not do well as bedding - old towels and blankets were the way to go for us. I did have trouble with my German Shepherd laying on the pups and needed to build a whelping box with hog rails to keep them safe, but with the smaller mini aussie it wasn't as much of an issue. We used a rubbermaid container for whelping her. Let me know if you need anything!

Usually pet smart carries these pools for about 10 dollars. If you have any questions, or need help with the whelping, feel free to let me know. I've whelped over 20 litters of puppies between my family and working for a vet.

Nope...still waiting. She started lactating yesterday and digging around in the nursery this morning.
