How long does it take for Benadryl to work on a dog? I put her on it because she started chewing on her feet, but I don't know how long to give it.

I hope it works for your dog. Benadryl never worked for ours

Have you had her checked out?

Benedryl should reduce inflammation from allergies or minor skin irritations. It may also relax a dog and/ or knock her out for a spell. When I have given my dogs Benedryl, I open the capsule and put it in their food. It seems to work quickly.

Dogs chew their feet; mostly because of food allergies related to grains and /or protein sources. Secondary would be environmental irritations to their paws (mold, fertilizer, pesticides, grass etc)

You might try switching protein sources- if she is on a chicken based diet, switch to salmon or bison or lamb. If she is on a diet with corn, wheat or soy flour- try a grain free diet or one with better ingredients. If you switch to a better food, make sure you switch to better treats as well.

Also, if your dog is obsessive about chewing her paws, it is good to distract her when you see her doing this. Throw the ball and play with him or have a favorite chew bone or antler ready to keep her mind off of chewing her paws!

Could it be ice melt chemicals on her paws? Sons Germ Shep goes on 2 Benadryl during tree pollen season once or twice a day and gets socks taped around his feet or else he'll chew his feet raw.

So you applied a lotion form? Our dog had issues with licking the same spot repeatedly, and we used the the liquid benadryl with good success. Took effect in maybe 10 minutes or so.

Hadn't thought of that, will try it now.

I'm sure it was the new dry food, switched back to the blue buffalo.

Depends on the size of the dog being given it... I usually gave mine one every couple of hours when it was really bad.

Was this a sudden thing?... my vet has always found it to be allergy related when any of my pups started chewing feet...
Benadryl will only treat the symptoms! I Had a highly allergic Aussie for years, and had switched her food and every chewing problem went away. Never needed the Benadryl again! Just a thought! hope your pup feels better soon!

Jam out with ur clam out
so benadryl can go both ways... can make a dog tired as in a sedate way OR can make them hyper.

also prolonged use of benadryl will dry out their skin and start to make them itchy. :banghead:

dosage is 1mg per lb. so its a fairly save medication .... for my one dog that is 85 lbs ... I can give him 100mg of Benadryl with no problem.

Just out of curiosity Merlin, why did you switch foods?

We had been feeding our dog one type of Blue Buffalo shortly after we moved here, and they changed the formula and something in it didn't agree with him. He also developed allergies to so many different foods and protein types that it was hard to find good food for him at times

I give Maggie, a 25 lb Shiba Inu, 25 mg of benedryl 2x a day. I get the tiny pink pills and stuff them in soft treats. She eats it up every time.

She has extremely itchy skin (a breed characteristic) and is missing clumbs of fur from her tail :frown: She used to be missing tufts of fur from her ears. Those have since grown in and now we're working on her tail. I'm thinking of getting some salmon oil to put in her food but I've been afraid of overdoing it. She's already on grain-free food: Taste of the Wild (salmon or wild fowl flavor) and I put a pinch of The Missing Link in it as well. I used to spray her tail with a hydrocortisone spray but realized she never even chews her tail...ever, so the missing fur isn't from chewing. It's not red or inflamed or flaky or anything. It looks like hair is growing in, it's fuzzy but her tail still looks a little rat-tail

Maggie is already an incredibly lazy dog and can barely be bothered to go outside to do her thing. Hard to tell how sleepy benedryl makes her bc all she does is sleep no matter what I gave her

dont think you will over do it on fish oils. my one dog was taking 1200 mg capsules (human grade) 6-8 of them a day.

Wife thought she was getting bored with her food so she thought she'd try something new.
