BEST BUY, MY FOOT
Best Buy has some bad policies....

Normally, I would not share this with others, however, since this could happen to you or your friends , I decided to share it. If you purchase something from, Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, JC Penny, Sears etc. and you return the item with the receipt they will give you your money back if you paid cash, or credit your account if paid by plastic.

Well, I purchased a GPS for my car, a Tom Tom XL.S from 'Best Buy'. They have a policy that it must be returned within 14 days for a refund!

So after 4 days I returned it in the original box with all the items in the box, with paper work and cords all wrapped in the plastic. Just as I received it, including the receipt.
I explained to the lady at the return desk I did not like the way it could not find store names. The lady at the refund desk said, there is a 15% restock fee, for items returned. I said no one told me that. I said how much would that be. She said it goes by the price of the item. It will be $45.00 Dollars for you. I said, all your going to do is walk over and place it back on the shelf then charge me $45.00 of my money for restocking?

She said that's the store policy. I said if more people were aware of it they would not buy anything here! If I bought a $2000.00 computer or TV and returned it I would be charged $300.00 dollars restock fee? She said yes, 15%.

I said OK, just give me my money minus the restock fee.

She said, since the item is over $200.00 dollars, she can't give me my money back!!!

Corporate has to and they will mail you a check in 7 to ten days.!! I said 'WHAT?!'

It's my money!! I paid in cash! I want to buy a different brand..Now I have to wait 7 to 10 days. She said well, our policy is on the back of your receipt.

I said, do you read the front or back of your receipt? She said well, the front! I said so do I, I want to talk to the Manager!.

So the manager comes over, I explained everything to him, and he said, well, sir they should of told you about the policy when you got the item.

I said, No one, has ever told me about the check refund or restock fee, whenever I bought items from computers to TVs from Best Buy.

The only thing they ever discussed was the worthless extended warranty program. He said Well, I can give you corporate phone number.

I called corporate. The guy said, well, I'm not supposed to do this but I can give you a 45.00 dollar gift card and you can use it at Best Buy. I told him if I bought something and returned it, you would charge me a restock fee on the item and then send me a check for the remaining 3 dollars.

You can keep your gift card, I'm never shopping in Best Buy ever again, and if I would of been smart, I would of charged the whole thing on my credit card! Then I would of canceled the transaction.

I would of gotten all my money back including your stupid fees! He didn't say a word!

I informed him that I was going to e-mail my friends and give them a heads up on this stores policy, as they don't tell you about all the little caveats.

So please pass this on. It may save your friends from having a bad experience of shopping at Best Buy

BestBuy.com Help:

Not only that, when I had an account with Best Buy, we took a little vacation and when my family and I returned our Best Buy bill was due the next day, I took it to Best Buy and they told me I cannot pay my bill at any of their stores, WTF??? They told me if I mail it in it will be past due and I will be charged a $35.00 late fee. She then stated I can go online or pay it over the phone with a credit card BUT, they charge a $20.00 fee for that!!! Butt heads!!! I then went to the post office with 30 minutes to spare and overnighted the payment to them which cost me $14!!!
On my next bill I paid it off in full and closed my account because of their shady business practices. :smack:

I've encountered the 15% restock scam as well but I never had to pay a fee in order to pay my Best buy account. Whenever it has a balance, I pay via the Website.

Won't buy anything more expensive than a movie or game from Best Buy. Oh, bought an IPOD. Never buy a computer from them. They push selling you a computer with Windows Vista on it. Told me it was great. :bs: I'll buy another Dell before I buy one from them. At least I can order it with XP.

I was in their store and was waiting to be approved for their credit card and was standing there reading all these signs they have above the registers. It says in plain english what they do on these signs. When they came with my approval for the credit card I told them never mind, after what I read I didn't want to buy anything from them after all! And left the store and have not been back.

Until tomorrow:

Per the Microsoft® Windows Life-Cycle policy, Direct OEM and Retail License Availability for Windows XP will End-Of-Life (EOL) on June 30, 2008. To meet Microsoft’s June 30 last-day-to-ship OEM Windows XP deadline, June 18 is the last time to purchase a Dell laptop, desktop, or workstation with an OEM Windows XP license(or while supplies last).

After June 18th you have the option to purchase Windows Vista Business or Windows Vista Ultimate with a downgrade service to Windows XP Professional.

This option will be available on XPS 630, 720 H2C, and M1730 systems. After June 18th, Windows XP will no longer be offered on currently available Inspiron desktops.

I'll never understand why people give all their personal info to a store clerk for a store card.

Plus, if you didn't get your application back it's probably sitting in a trash can for anyone to pick up.

Just to give you a heads up, I have a Dell and I got an email from dell stating that this is the last week to purchase a Dell with windows XP as it is no longer available after this week.

Best Buy is horrible, I talked about it on here before. If Newegg dosen't have it, I don't need it.

There use to be a site bestbusucks.com that was dedicated to people telling of all their bad experiences, I see it is no longer in operation though.

I had a hell of a time one Christmas season returning a camera I bought for my wife. Same restock fee thing, same damned reason and I argued the same thing - I can't believe you're going to CHARGE me so you can take this thing and walk it over to the shelf - hell *I* can do that.

After fighting with them repeatedly, someone finally disclosed that say, for Christmas, there were certain items, such as laptops and digital cameras where people could use them minimally for certain uses - pictures, term papers etc. - and then return them after they'd been used. Thus, they lose money due to this kind of abuse. They discourage this behavior by charging a restock fee.

I then pointed out to them that this camera was NOT digital - it was your basic 35mm camera which was pretty obvious to see and prominent described as such on the box.

"Oh".

Got my money back, but pretty much left determined never to buy a big ticket item there since. Aside from an occasional DVD, I've kept that promise.

That is why many have the restocking fees, to discourage the people who want to return big screens the week after the Super Bowl and what not.

I have, however, encountered merchants who tried to charge restocking fees when I returned things they screwed up. Word to the wise: if you need a cheapie cell phone for your kid or emergencies stay faaaar away from Tracphone. Worst customer service I recieved from any company. They'd give Comcast a run for their money.

'Best Buy' is the worst. I remember wanting to buy a gig of ram to add to my comp and figured I'd buy it retail instead of shipping etc. from newegg.

$40.00 at new egg

$120.00 at best buy

I laughed at the guy trying to tell me it was inexpensive.

terrible terrible place.

Anyone that hasn't discovered newegg yet is living in the dark ages. They are awesome, I ordered something from them late one Sunday night. It was on my front porch Tues. afternoon. Standard shipping too.

If you don't want to pay the restocking fee just tell them that whatever you bought is broken. They will give you a full refund with no restocking fee.
