Best of the BlueRay Players

Vote for Amazon's $199 PS3 bundle - Joystiq

Still too pricey at $199? With a $50 game thrown in and a +$20 game thrown in? HEck, I voted for that mixer in round six also, wifes been wanting that sucker, and I'm sure I can find a use for the extra 300 hundred dollars.

I'm not a gamer at all. If I get a player, it would be dedicated to the home theatre. I just ordered the internal blueray DVD player for my PC which will work just fine.

Power with Control
Yeah, I can see that, I do game, so it was a no brainer two years ago. The lack of an IR port has thankfully become moot, thanks to the Nyko Blu-Wave remote, which lets me completely control the PS3 using my Harmony.

My only concern would be, for an internal, that its capable of all the Profile 2.0 features, if you are interested in those. Looks like some players require Power DVD 8 to access all the 2.0 stuff.

2.0 isn't a big concern right now, it will be later. Not sure if the player I just bought even supports it. Right now, I'm ripping all my DVDs to hard drives, and want to experiment with ripping BlueRay. See how much space it needs, how well can I play it back, etc. This was a low cost way to do that. If it works, I can pretty much play it back on any PC with high def output.

Let me know how that goes, I couldn't see the point in ripping a Blu-ray the content is anywhere from 25 to 50gb. You could compress it but that would defeat the purpose of 1080p.

...blu ray was falling out of favor?

No they beat out HD-DVD because they are able to hold more data. HD-DVD max out at 15GB and Blu ray holds 25GB and 50GB and they're capable of being expanded more.

Blue ray has not fallen out of favor. They are now surpassing the 1000 titles mark by March of 09. Apparently that was the tell tale sign of failure if they could not get to the 1000 mark.

We have the PS3 older 60 GB unit I upgraded to 320gb drive and use for both movies and gaming. We just got the Xbox 360 for Netflix on-line movies and games as well.

I like the PS3 to because you can stream files from your PC. I didn't upgrade the drive though I just attached a 500GB external.

Yes we stream from the PC as well. But we also download a lot of games and content from the internet to the PS3 and I think we are over 80gb storage now so even the 80gb would not work. I suppose if we had the smaller drive we would just be more diligent in deleting files that are not used much. Plus having the drive internal is cleaner looking.

I don't even think I have half of the 60GB filled up I have to check I never have time to play games anymore.

He's ripping normal DVDs TO BLu-Rays, not ripping the Blu-Rays to the hard drive.

Actually, Justin is right. I'm ripping dvds and bluerays directly to disk. Right now i have almost 2 terabytes of DVD movies. with the price of storage coming down again, allocating 25-50 gig on a 1 or 2 terabyte drive isn't much. It's all part of my concept for a completely digital home theatre. With the software I have, I can rip only the movie and leave all the other stuff behind, the trailers, the "special features", etc....
