Best website for plane tickets?

Theres a ton of sites for plane tickets, who has the best prices in your experiences? Going to LAX from DC. Any airlines to absolutely stay away from (besides Delta?)?. Thanks!

It varies. Sometimes you get a good deal from a site like Tavelocity, and sometimes a better deal directly from the airline. I usually get a better deal if I book directly with SouthWest, for example. Just have to shop around.

I've gotten my best deals thru Orbitz for less traveled routes, and the airline direct for regular non-stops.

All websites advertise the same prices. I usually use Expedia (easiest to navigate for me), then try Southwest since they don't show up on Expedia searches. I try to book directly w/the airline once I've narrowed down my search on Expedia. Sometimes I book different carriers -- for me it depends on the cheapest flight.

How about if I want to stop at a different airport on the way back and spend a few days there before coming back to DC? This is so much more difficult than hiking somewhere.

If it's more than a one day stopover, you'll probably have to book two separate flights.

I use Kayak to book my son's trips out here at Christmas and Summer vacation. He flies from LAX area to DC. Never had a problem with that site.

I like Kayak as well. It will allow you to plug in a multi-stop trip. You don't book directly with kayak - it directs you to the website offering the lowest fare. But note that it too does NOT show Southwest fares.

KAYAK - Cheap Flights - Deals on Airline Tickets - Airfare - Compare Hundreds of Travel Sites

I read an article by a travel reporter at ABC a few years ago. Best recommendation was that airlines reserve about 10% of their seats for the cheap prices and they adjust their prices about 3 times a day - he recommended picking a favorite site and signing up for their alerts when prices change.

I agree with a few other posters - I've sometimes had better luck with prices directly from the airline's site.
