BestBuy Personal Service Plans

Has anyone out there traded in a TV under a bestbuy service warranty? I had purchased a TV in 2004, paid 2700 for the TV in 2004. I took the tv back to the store last night, and had a complete run around about how much money we would get back. Before taking the TV into the store we had talked with 3 associates who all told me that we would receive the difference back via instore credit from the old TV and the new TV. So we picked out a TV that we liked and suited us. There was a 1300 difference in the prices of the tvs. We get upfront to do the exchange of the tv's and the manager tells us it is spec for spec, and that we can't get the difference between the old tv and the new tv in in store credit. So now I am starting to make a ton of calls into corporate about what had happened.

Just wondering if anyone thinks that this is right, or if they have had the similar problem before.

I'm curious as to how the manager or Best Buy can say, "spec for spec?" Because the specifications are going to change quite a bit over 3 years or even 1 year and if they add 1 small item to the new TV that really doesn't change it that much, they can sit there and say it doesn't meet the same specs.

exactly, plus as electronics advance in normal society, they come out with better things, which makes the older ones go down in price. All in all, I walked out of best buy with a 55" Sony. I ended up getting a 5" larger tv that had a better HDTV pixel rating then the last. But still there was a 700 difference between the old and new. I feel like they really got over on me for this one.

Let me make sure I have this right. You got to upgrade your TV, and you didn't have to pay any more for it. Do I have that right so far? What was wrong with the original TV?

That is correct, the original tv was covered by the lemon law on the warranty clause. if there is a problem with the tv, and you have it fixed 4 times then they consider it a lemon. I actually had the tv fixed 2 times, the third time they could not get the parts for it anymore, so they let me exchange it.

My main thing is that we originally paid 2700 for the original tv, then the new tv only came to 2100. I think I should of received a instore credit for the difference between the tvs. I know it was nice of them to upgrade the tv size since the one I wanted was on backorder. But what about the remainder of my money?

I see your point have you heard anything from them? What if you were to ask for half of the difference? Compromise is the key. Good luck :howdy:

I have tried and tried again to compromise with them. At the time we went to return the tv, we had picked some items out from in the store as we were told by 4 associates the difference would be in instore credit. So my daughter(who is 7) wanted a nintendo DS. We let her pick one out, as her eyes grew big with excitement. As we got up front the manager told us it was a even exchange and there would be no instore credit. So my daughter started crying. So we asked the manager to keep the tv we had picked out instead of upgrading us and let us keep the ds with one game.

The manager then said no, so now for me it was a point. If I am not getting money back, I wanted the most expensive TV I could get as they were not going to keep that much of my money. How frustrating it was.

This doesn't make much sense to me....they replaced your TV with a better one...what you paid 3 years ago is irrelevant. A warranty is not a guarantee of value, it's an agreement that if, within a certain time period, the item fails, they will replace it with the same or similar product. Unless of course, they gave you a "money-back guarantee", that's a different story.

Ok, So maybe i am just overreacting. I am glad that they replaced my tv, and gave me a larger one. But the thing I am angry about now is that 4 associates had told me i would get the instore credit. Would you not be a little upset if 4 associates had told you something, and when it was time to get it, they refused to give it to you and talked with you like you were a liar?

I too agree, you were treated like a king by best buy compared to most of my dealings with them.

Well consider the source do you think that someone that makes $6 an hour knows what they are talking about?

I bought a extended warrenty at Lowes for a chainsaw thinking they would replace it when the pull cord didn't retract, nope I had to drive about 45 minutes to take it to a repair shop and then a week later drive back to get it. In all that warrenty cost me about $12 in gas and 4 hours of my time to be honored.

When it comes to warrenties dont believe anything unless it is in writing.

I guess everyone is right, after the initial frustration had gone away, and now I am sitting down thinking about it, I did over react, and should of read all of the fine print. I guess I did get pretty lucky, as they had fixed the old tv twice and i did not have to pay for it. So now I am going to go set up my new 55" and enjoy a evening of movies.

its as close as they can get to spec for spec... in most cases you will make out in someway; if you had a 3yr old computer... and ended up getting it exchanged out -- you'd get the most basic emachine they can find, but it will still be a better machine than what you DID have. same goes for tvs.

&& itd be a little TOO nice to get the difference back in price, the only GOOD thing is you CAN buy another service plan to cover your free product...

such as. i purchased a microwave, it got deemed more cost effective to replace the unit... therefore i got a new one. since them replacing it fulfills the service plan, i had to purchase another one... so i'm covered on my replacement unit for another four years...

oh && the mass majority of employees don't read the terms & conditions... just like you didn't either.
