I knew there was another lady at the Bible Study. I didn't mention her last week because I couldn't remember her name. So Sandy is tall like me. I didn't mean to leave her out of the mix. Another lady should be joining the group this afternoon. Both of these women are beautiful. If we keep growing, we'll have to move out of the dining room and into the living room.
So last week we got through the greeting a little early and we went on to verses 10-12. On top of that, today we are going to do two lessons. A few of the ladies in our group are snowbirds and they will be leaving to go back up north in the spring so we'll need to speed up a little.
a. 1 Peter 1:16 Lev. 11:44,45; 19:2
This is a letter that is packed with information. I'll break it down like the commentaries and the book we're using breaks it down.
The prophets: I think Peter brings up the Prophets and the Angels because the followers were well acquainted with what the Prophets had been saying since Genesis. Prophets had been predicting the coming of the Messiah for decades. They had also been telling us that when the Messiah did show up, He would go through trials. The Prophets didn't know everything.... they were given words to say but the meaning wouldn't be known to them.
I guess the best way to explain it is this.... John saw Revelation..... he was told to keep some parts to himself.... and we clearly have a problem understanding huge portions of it.
This is from GodVine.
The commentaries [and the book we're reading in the Bible Study] get really preachy.
Go back to Exodus 13. God told the Israelites to sacrifice a lamb for a donkey. There were also provisions made for providing 5 sheckels of gold for the redemption of a first born son. There was also a provision that if the parents didn't go to the temple to make the sacrifice for the firstborn, then the firstborn himself could make the redemption.
Peter is saying, here, that Christ made that sacrifice for all of us. We don't have to pay the priest. So since Christ paid that price for us, we owe Him for that redemption.
He did it for us without our asking.... that is true.... but if He hadn't done it.... well we'd still be slaves. If God didn't take the Israelites out of Egypt then they would have spent their whole lives under a slavemaster's whip.
So that's what Peter is saying here.... Each of us is going to be judged.... what did we do with the gift of redemption?

1 Peter 1: 10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest care, 11 trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of the Messiah and the glories that would follow. 12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you, when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things.
13 Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. 14 As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”[a]
17 Since you call on a Father who judges each person’s work impartially, live out your time as foreigners here in reverent fear. 18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. 21 Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.

We may presume that, in a great variety of cases, the prophets did not understand the meaning of their own predictions. They had a general view of God's designs; but of particular circumstances, connected with those great events, they seem to have known nothing, God reserving the explanation of all particulars to the time of the issue of such prophecies. When they wished to find out the times, the seasons, and the circumstances, God gave them to understand that it was not for themselves, but for us, that they did minister the things which are now reported unto us by the preaching of the Gospel. This was all the satisfaction they received in consequence of their earnest searching; and this was sufficient to repress all needless curiosity, and to induce them to rest satisfied that the Judge of all the earth would do right. If all succeeding interpreters of the prophecies had been contented with the same information relative to the predictions still unaccomplished, we should have had fewer books, and more wisdom.
