Bible Study 1 Peter Babies

1 Peter 2:1 Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. 2 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, 3 now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.

OK... I am the oldest of five kids and mother of four. I've given my baby a little touch of my mashed potatoes well before they were able to digest it. As a matter of fact, my children were lactose intolerant. I've seen babies who were so hungry that they wouldn't eat! [Not mine of course :gossip:]. So craving spiritual milk is a concept I can understand.

It's that first verse of this second chapter that I have a real problem with. Apparently the commentators have a problem with it too because they don't explain it.... they just slam right into being preachy.

The easy English commentary says this.

This verse continues from chapter 1:22. A person who loves other people will want to help them and say good things about them. The words that people use show what their spirit is like. Jesus said this in Matthew 12:33-37. All the behaviour in this verse is evil. ‘Stop’ means remove it from your life. Peter lists 5 evil things that Christians should remove from their lives.

You know, there's going to be a time when Satan is no longer roaming around. For 1000 years Jesus will reign over us.... and without Satan tugging us the wrong way all the time, it'll be easier to make all the right decisions and live without all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind in our lives. Peter is telling us here that because we are followers of Christ, sojourning through this earthly life with our eyes on Christ on a journey to Heaven, Jesus is already reigning over our lives. If we let the old garbage go.... we can actually live without all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. An now.... I'm being preachy....

I have a number of good commentaries, and they all are in the same thrust for 2:1 - Believers Bible Commentary: "Because they are partakers of the divine life, Christians (believers) should put away once and for all the following unloving acts: (definitions of each sin mentioned). All of these sins are violations of the fundamental commandment to love our neighbor as ourselves. No wonder Peter tells us to decisively rid ourselves of them."

No matter how long one has been, or how long they think they have been saved, if you still harbor those intentions, then you will never progress beyond the realm of new babes in anything.
