Biden pick shows lack of confidence

The candidate of change went with the status quo.

In picking Sen. Joe Biden to be his running mate, Barack Obama sought to shore up his weakness — inexperience in office and on foreign policy — rather than underscore his strength as a new-generation candidate defying political conventions.

He picked a 35-year veteran of the Senate — the ultimate insider — rather than a candidate from outside Washington, such as Govs. Tim Kaine of Virginia or Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas; or from outside his party, such as Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska; or from outside the mostly white male club of vice presidential candidates. Hillary Rodham Clinton didn't even make his short list.

The picks say something profound about Obama: For all his self-confidence, the 47-year-old Illinois senator worried that he couldn't beat Republican John McCain without help from a seasoned politician willing to attack. The Biden pick is the next logistical step in an Obama campaign that has become more negative — a strategic decision that may be necessary but threatens to run counter to his image.

The Associated Press: Analysis: Biden pick shows lack of confidence

If anything, Obama is pragmatic. Good pick in my opinion for VP.

I think Biden was a choice politically, it might help get Barry elected. Barry's followers already drank the kool aid so they really don't care who he picked. But perhaps undecided folks might think Biden can settle the kid down.

...this is another facet of this fantastically entertaining election cycle.

Obama got where he is on HOPE and CHANGE and a new, post partisan politics.

Since he has secured the nomination, under dubious circumstances, and crashed in the polls with his various attempts to keep that theme rolling into the general election, far from the warm embrace of the American left and college kids, he is now moving to the right.

He's silenced his wife. He's no more plans to hold concerts in Europe. He's considering drilling for oil and is on the verge of acknowledging that, all things considered, the surge was the thing to do. Now, he picks a guy who could damn near be McCain's pick for veep; a guy who got NOWHERE in the recent or past Dem primaries who now they all must fake love for.

The bloom is off the rose. So now what? How much does this deflate the kiddie vote? How much does this help with with racists in the Dem party? How much does this help him with moderates and independents? How much does this help him with the hardcore Hillary crew?

McCain has in his power the ability to wipe out the last shred of Obama's claims for a new politics by picking Liebermann because it would require Mac to be new, and exciting and a huge change and would require a great deal of courage to not bail and make a 'safe' pick and, frankly, would be totally in keeping with McCain and his record.

We've seen Obama punt. Now, I'd imagine McCain is about to bail out Obama by doing the exact same thing.

Fascinating.
