You make $X, the government allows you to deduct $Y and they tax you on $Z. Based on the article he made $944,737 and paid nearly $300K (why did they give the exact income but rounded the tax?). If you calculate this out, that income with standard deductions would result in a tax of $321,045, so Biden apparently had other deductions to get down $288K +another $12K (AMT???).

Everyone tries to make $Y as large as legally possible to make $Z as small as possible.
