CNN) -- Pope Benedict XVI has said he is "very upset" that his speech on Islam offended Muslims and expressed his respect for their faith, according to the Vatican

"Of course as we know the meaning of jihad can only be understood by Muslims," Budianto told the crowd. "Only Muslims can understand what jihad is. It is impossible that jihad can be linked with violence, we Muslims have no violent character."

The statement came as anger over the pontiff's comments continued to grow. Unknown assailants threw fire bombs on Saturday at two churches in the West Bank city of Nablus, following a day of Palestinian protests against the pope's remarks. No one was hurt.

 No violent character huh?

It's really scary to me how much hate and nastiness there is in the world today. I love my kid more than anything but I wonder what I have done bringing him into this f#!*ed up mess. The world is going to hell.

Very upset??? He says something that needs to be said by someone in power, he then gets the expected violent reaction and he is upset? What is he thinking?

I think that the pope should stand by what he said the first time. The violence that results is just proof of his point.
