Big screens; Is the panacea just an illusion?

Larry Gude

Strung Out
For people trying desperately to find value and security in today's turbulent world, the latest disappointment is big screen TV's. Oh sure, it sounds good in all the brochures and everyone talks them up like you've just got to have one, but, buy one and before you've even got it home you can't get what you paid for it and only one year later it's worth perhaps half. Two, you can't give it away. It's gotten almost as bad as throwing your money away on a home. In fact, a current inducement is to offer one free house for each TV you buy over 48". For the unwary or uneducated, you're just asking to get whacked.

So, be careful out there. Do your homework. The smart money is on rentals. You can live like you own it without all the hassles, get a bigger one than you might otherwise be able to afford and when you get tired of it, and you will, or a better one comes along, and it will, you just trade up or get out. No fuss. No muss. After all, you're never going to get your money back owning. So why be an idiot?

Rent! It's more than a musical!

Larry, why couldn't you have warned me earlier? My TV ARM just readjusted, and I cannot afford the payments on my TV. It looks like I might get foreclosed on. What will I ever do?

If only I had known, I could be sitting in front of a rented TV pedaling an uber-expensive exercise bike while I look out the window of my waterfront mansion with the view of the Potomac.

Oh, woe is me.

I agree with you on most things, but renting is always the worst thing you can do!
Most Video rental companies make loan sharks look respectable.

Sadly the uneducated poor do exactly that at usury rates. I don't think the furniture/appliance rental market has a rate cap like a loan, so they gouge the poor who have high risk credit ratings. I have seen computers offered for rent on TV that have 100% ROI to the lender in 2 months. The rates are worse than "payday loans".

Rent a Heat pump

Anyone know where I can rent a heat pump? I want one that is all inclusive. One set price for the month. Heat is included!
