bike suggestions

ok all you experienced motorcycle riders... got a question for ya! I am female, and want to get my motorcycle learners and a bike.. what bike would you recommend for me? I am thinking maybe a star virago , i ride with my dad and he says the Virago (250) is really too small and that after a short time i will not be happy with it..

I think the 650 will be to heavy for me to handle, Ive been riding a 49 cc 185 lb "baby bike" (dont laugh it will do 50 mph) and really want to move up to a "real motorcycle"

this will be only for recreation not daily commuting...

I'd use the 250 to get your license. Otherwise, the course is almost impossible to pass with a bigger bike. Once you get your license just get comfortable with the bigger bike and you'll be ready to go. A 600cc bike would be a good starter unless you're into Harley's like me, then a Sportser or LowRider would be a good start...

If you take the course in LaPlata they give you a 250 to take the course on.

A 600 or 650 is a fine bike to start on. Like your dad said if you get a small bike you will be tired of it within months. Since you have some basic skills you should learn on a bike you are planning to ride for a while.

yeah i was just wonderin cuz my dad has a v-star that he is getting ready to sell for @ the same price as I would pay for the virago... but he wont let me touch it ... lol he said keep practicing on the baby bike for now... :lmao: but i am growing bored with that one!!!

I started with a Honda Rebel, 250, about 350 pounds. Great bike to learn on. I would definitely recommend starting with a 250, getting used to that and then moving up. You will learn to ride it and then move on, but you do learn a lot on the 250's. I have a 650 V-star now and am still getting used to the weight of it (it's heavy for me , but I'm kind of small). Mine is only for weekend rides with friends/hubby.

:yeahthat:
Go up to Atlantic Cycle and sit on some bikes and lift them off the side stand to see what it feels like to hold the weight up.

You should be able to do the 650, but the v-star's are a bit heavy on the front end.

I learned quick how to give my 650 more throttle after dumping it at the end of my road. I also have learned about setting my foot down on an acorn, grease slick at an intersection, etc. The guys on here will tease you about things, but they also have a LOT of good info to pass on. Oh, don't post about your "learning" experiences cause you will never hear the end of it. :lmao: Been there, done that.

Another female here, I have a boulevard C-50, i thinks it like 850cc, fit a female pretty good. Easy to handle. I also took the safety class on the Rebel. The class saved my life. If you need insurance give GEICO Motorcycle a call. My rate is 163.50 for a year.

Take one step at a time. Become proficient on this 250 Rebel(click it) , use it to get your license and when you feel like you are ready sell it to another beginner and get a bigger bike. The Rebel will be good for shorts jaunts and errands but under powered for long highway trips.

Ditto.. I started out on a Rebel also and am now on a 1100.. I didn't mind starting little and working my way up..
